Poop – A word which might make you feel gross as soon as you read it but it is actually doing magic in the medical world. You have heard about organ transplants but the poop transplant is a phenomenon which is not very popular in the world. If you are thinking this is some kind of a joke then let us enlighten you about this phenomenon. This exceptional process is called as Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) in medical term and in layman’s term we call it a poop transplant. This incredibly gross sounding treatment has a huge range of medical benefits.
Believe it or not but this treatment is very effective, especially at a Clostridium difficile infection (C diff). This disease can cause problems like fever, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea and watery diarrhea. Now, if you talk about the antibiotic used to treat Clostridium difficile infection, which is Vancomycin, it has a cure rate of 23%-31% but on the other hand, poop transplant has a success rate of 94%.
Now, why do we need someone else’s poop?
If you are being insecure about your poop then yes, your poop is not good enough. Though nothing major is wrong but when some types of beneficial bacteria’s go AWOL from your digestive system then it cause the disease like irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and Clostridium difficile infection. Then comes the healthy poop and with the transplant, it helps to re-establish these silly missing microbes and hopefully makes your digestive system healthier and cure the patient.
Apparently this phenomenon has been in the world since the 4th century, at that time the Chinese used it to cure food poisoning and diarrhea. They have been using it by the name of ‘Yellow Soup’, which sounds totally gross but remember it was for the medical purpose.
Now, in the developed countries, poop transplant is used as an alternate option mostly because of the frequent use of antibiotics. The doctor suggests that the antibiotics despite being a lifesaver cause collateral damage but with the poop transplant they can add some good organisms that make your complex working gut healthy and balanced.
So! Next time when you are sitting on the pot, remember – This Shit Is Serious!!
