If we talk about the smartphone industry, the year 2017 has all been about setting new trends introducing high-end features and showing prospective buyers what their money’s worth. From Nokia’s resurrection to Blackberry’s last fight, from Apple’s biggest gamble to Samsung finally finding its pièce de résistance and from Xiaomi ruling the VFM game to Indian smartphone maker giving a tough fight to their Chinese counterparts, we have seen everything this year.
We had a smartphones launch almost every week this year, but not all of them were that sought after to be inducted into the most ‘Popular Smartphones Of 2017’ list. There were only a few which dominated the headlines and people’s mindshare in India.
When it comes to the most popular smartphones of the year, the buzz that OnePlus 5 and iPhone X created throughout the year, can’t be argued with, however, the Indian market has shown their interest towards a VFM price tag and stand out features, at least according to the Google ‘Year in Search’ report.

Apple iPhone 8 was launched in September 2017 and it comes with a 4.70-inch (1334*750) touchscreen display at a PPI of 326 pixels per inch. It is powered by hexa-core Apple A11 Bionic SoC and comes with 2GB of RAM. The smartphone packs 64GB of internal storage and the camera duties are handled by a 12MP primary rear camera and a 7MP front shooter for selfies.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was launched in August 2016 and comes with a 5.50-inch (1920*1080) touchscreen display at a PPI of 401 pixels per inch it is powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor clocked at 2GHz and comes with 4GB of RAM. As far as the cameras are concerned, Redmi Note 4 packs a 13MP rear primary camera and a 5MP front shooter for selfies.
3. JioPhone
Launched in July 2017, JioPhone is the first ever featured phone to come with 4G connectivity in India. It comes with a 2.40-inch (240*320) display and is powered by 1.2GHz dual-core SPRD 9820A/QC8905 chipset backed by 512MB of RAM. While phone packs 4GB of internal storage and supports MicroSD card, it packs a 2MP primary camera and a 0.3MP front shooter for selfies. JioPhone runs KAI OS and is backed by a 2000mAh removable battery.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched in October 2017 and comes with a 5.00-inch (720*1280) touchscreen display at a PPI of 294 pixels per inch. It is powered by quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clocked at 1.4GHz and comes with 2GB of RAM. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Redmi 5A packs a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP front shooter for selfies.
5. OnePlus 5
Launched in June 2017, OnePlus 5 comes with a 5.50-inch (1080*1920) touchscreen display, 1.9GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and 6GB of RAM. The smartphone packs 64GB of internal storage and camera duties in the OnePlus 5 are handled by a 16 + 20MP rear camera and a 16MP front shooter for selfies.
Marking iPhone’s 10th anniversary, Apple launched its most expensive smartphone ever dubbed as the iPhone X in September 2017. It comes with a 5.8-inch (2436 x 1125) OLED display, 64-bit A11 Six-core Bionic chipset, 64GB, and 256GB of internal storage options, iOS 11, Dual 12MP rear cameras, 7MP front camera, FaceID, wireless charging and Water and dust resistant rating (IP67).
7. Nokia 6
Launched in January 2017, Nokia 6 comes with a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080 x 1920) display, Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC clocked at 1.2 GHz, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, Android 7.1.1 Nougat, 16MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, 3000mAh battery and a Fingerprint scanner.
8. Vivo V7 Plus
Vivo V7+ was launched in September 2017 and offers a 5.99-inch (1440 x 720) 18:9 FullView display, 1.8GHz Octa-Core Snapdragon 450 SoC, 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage, Android 7.1 (Nougat), 16MP rear camera, 24MP front-facing camera, 3225 mAh built-in battery and a fingerprint scanner.
9. Oppo F5
Launched in October 2017, Oppo F5 comes with a 6-inch (2160 × 1080) 18:9 FHD+ display, 2.5GHz Octa-Core MediaTek Helio P23 chipset, 4GB RAM/32GB storage, 6GB RAM/64GB storage options, Android 7.1 (Nougat) based on ColorOS 3.2 UI, 16MP rear camera, 20MP front-facing camera, Dedicated microSD port and a 3200mAh built-in battery.
10. Vivo V5
Vivo V5 was launched in November 2016 and the smartphone comes with a 5.50-inch (720*1280) touchscreen display, 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, expandable up to 128GB, 13MP primary camera and a 20MP front shooter for selfies. The whole package is backed by a 3000mAh battery on runs on Android 6.0.1.
These were the 10 most popular smartphone of 2017 that managed to at least attract a lot of interest in India if not the sales numbers. However, the list completely highlights the fact that it was the year of bezel-less displays, dual-camera setup, high-end features and a VFM price tag.
