We all have seen the ancient version of goddesses but what if they existed in today’s world. Can you imagine them without facebook, snapchat, twitter or Instagram? No, well neither can Priyanka Paul. Who is she? Priyanka is a 17-year-old artist from India who thinks of Goddesses as modern day feminists and she brought these powerful female deities to life with her amazing work.
Priyanka posted her vivid imagination in the form of images on her Instagram profile and we can’t deny that her work is amazing. Her series is inspired by the poem “Pantheon,” composed by Harnidh Kaur, who is also a fellow student at the St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
She has modernised four goddesses including the Shinto deity Amaterasu, the Greek goddess Hera, the Hindu goddess Kali and the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis. Apart from these four, she modernised the famous biblical character of Eve. In her imaginations, these goddesses are social media-savvy in today’s world and they are aware of the power they hold and also they are unashamed of their sexualities. Priyanka describes Kali as a “badass brown girl” who opposes misogyny and sexism. Goddess Amaterasu is described as a girl who supports the “Free the Nipple” movement. Eve is projected as a medical student who is fighting against the gender pay gap. She took each character and created portraits of fierce and non-conforming women. It is pure inspiration.
