Monday night saw an epic battle of words between the US presidential candidates at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Donald Trump was at his outlandish best while Hillary Clinton tried to keep up with him desperately. Trump tried to make Hillary lose her temper but she never lost her calm between the allegations.
FORMAT: The debate started at 6:30 am IST and was concluded after 90 min at 8:00 am. It was divided into six segments of 15 minutes each. Two segments each were given to the three focus points of the debate which were:
1. Achieving Prosperity
2. America’s Direction
3. Securing America (National Security and Foreign Policy)
The Debate Moderator was Lester Holt who is the anchor of NBC Nightly News.
Every segment started with a question and both the candidates were given two minutes to respond followed by a 10 min open debate. Hillary Clinton was the first one to answer, as she lost the coin toss and the first question went to Hillary Clinton.
Here is what Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Said:
1. Creation Of Jobs
Hillary Clinton said that she wanted to invest in infrastructure, technology and small businesses so that more jobs can be provided to the people.
Donald Trump again targeted Mexico and other countries for stealing jobs(seriously!) and also said that the most appropriate measure is to ban outsiders in America to apply for jobs.
In the 10 min open debate, Trump accused Hillary of not implementing all these things in her previous 30 year tenure at different levels of US politics and to this, Hillary advised him to go and settle in Mexico if he really thinks that all the opportunities are being given to Mexican nationals.
2. Economy
Donald Trump said that he would be decreasing the taxes tremendously from 35% to 15% giving the corporates a chance to grow, increase their profits and thus creating new jobs.
Hillary Clinton in an answer to Donald Trump’s strategy said that cutting down the tax rates will topple down the country’s economy and will further increase the State’s debt. According to her, the best alternative is to invest in the economy and increasing the earning capacity of people. She also wants to increase the tax rate for wealthy people.
3. Racism
Finally a topic on which both the candidates shared similar concerns, BUT, by default they had to argue on something and it started because of their different strategies.
Hillary Clinton wants to end racism by educating people and re-establishing their trust in the Government. According to her, the only way to counter this problem is to treat all the communities equally and generate harmony among them.
Donald Trump countered with saying that the one and only way to tackle this problem is, to make strict rules and laws. He also wants to bring back the ‘stop and frisk’ policy which has been banned by the constitution earlier.
(Both of them gave these comments with respect to recent killings in Charlotte)
In the open debate Hillary accused Trump for negatively commenting on Black People and gave Trump the taste of his own medicine(Take That!!)
4. Gun Laws
God bless them both for coming to an agreement on something. They both said that proper verifying norms should be established to decrease the security risk of Americans.
5. Cyber Attacks
Hillary Clinton branded Russia as the biggest threat in the cyber world for US and dashed at Trump for frequently supporting Vladimir Putin in his comments.
Donald Trump blamed the policy makers(actually Barack Obama) for not investing enough resources in this department resulting in all these cyber attacks.
6. ISIS(Islamic State of Iraq And Syria)
Hillary Clinton said the the main priority of the future President should be to fight ISIS.
Donald Trump said that the origin of ISIS is caused by the decisions taken by the previous Presidents, as their decision to enter Iraq and taking all their oil supplies was not a good idea.
Hillary clinton further added that at the time of Iraqi invasion,Trump was one of the people who supported the decision.
Once the debate ended, it was time for the viewers to select the winner of this debate and it would not be hard to guess the winner.
Hillary Clinton got 62% of votes from the viewers and the ‘Outlandish Speaker’ had to do it with just 27% of votes(it is actually more than we expected) resulting in lead of 1-0 Hillary Clinton.
The debate being the first one, with two more to come has resulted in the viewers drooling for more . The next one is scheduled on 9 October at Washington University,St.Louis and we will be waiting desperately for that debate to commence.
