On Wednesday, mobile and internet services were suspended in Jammu due to protests across the city after a “mentally disturbed” person desecrated an ancient temple.
On Tuesday, an ancient temple situated in Roop Nagar area of Jammu was vandalised which led to protests in parts of the city. The man entered the Aap Shambhu temple in the evening and broke a few things and windowpanes. He has been arrested but this incident triggered protests in which people attacked the police station and set vehicles on fire.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jammu, Simrandeep Singh stated,”As a precautionary measure, we have decided to suspend mobile Internet services till the situation returns to normal“.
He also added that top police officials are monitoring the situation and the decision of barring the mobile Internet services is taken to stop any further outburst. If the situation remains normal, mobile Internet services will be restored by the evening.
On Tuesday night, protesters set 3 vehicles on fire and attacked the police station. Many of the protesters were under the influence of alcohol and the police had to retaliate with mild “lathi” charge and tear gas to control the situation.
