India lost a hockey legend on Wednesday morning as Mohammed Shahid took his last breath in Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon. He was just 56 and was suffering from multiple kidney and liver ailments for several weeks. He had slipped into a coma on Tuesday night and passed away early on Wednesday morning.
The 1980 Olympic Gold medalist and arguably the greatest hockey player of his generation was brought to Medanta hospital in the last week of June. The legend is survived by his wife Parveen and two children, Heena and Saif. Shahid ignored a bout of jaundice which triggered the liver and kidney ailments.
The former Union sports minister Dr. Jitendra Singh had announced a grant of Rs. 10 lakh for the legendary player earlier, the Railways had also announced that all the medical expenses of Shahid will be taken care by them.
The word of his death got out in the world through the twitter account of a journalist Sailesh Chaturvedi, who also announced the sad news of Shahid slipping into a coma earlier.

As soon as the news of hockey wizard’s death broke to the world, the sporting world started pouring their condolences on twitter and other social media platforms.
