Dipa Karmakar, the Indian gymnast became the first Indian to qualify for the individual vault finals in her debut Olympic Games. Dipa scripted history as she made the cut for the vault final after finishing 8th in the qualifying round.
Dipa is a resident of Tripura and she is India’s first woman gymnast who qualified for the Olympics as well as managed to perform ‘Produnova’ vault. Dipa secured 14.850 points after two attempts in the qualifying round.
At the end of the qualifying round, Dipa had ended at sixth position after the third of five subdivisions but she dropped to 8th position after Canadian Shallon Olsen secured 14.950 points. Dipa was able to secure a place in the finals that are scheduled for 14 August. The finals will be held between the top-8 Gymnasts.
Dipa‘s first Produnova vault not as good as her second one, as she stunned others with her second vault which was a ‘Tsuk double full twist’ with a step to the side.
Simone Biles, who is a three-time world all-round champion, topped the chart with an amazing score of 16.050. Jong Un Hong from North Korea scored second place after securing 15.683 and Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber scored third with a score of 15.266.
