Devendra Jhajharia won the Gold medal for the men’s javelin throw F46 event in Rio 2016 Paralympics. This medal is India’s second Gold medal and fourth medal overall, in this year’s Paralympics. He made a world record of 63.97 metres and broke his own previous record of 62.15 metres, which he made in Athens 2004 Paralympics that earned him his first gold medal for the same.
Jhajharia is a Rajasthan born athlete with an amputated left hand that he lost after being electrocuted while climbing when he was merely 8 years old. Apart from 2 gold medals in paralympics, Devendra has been awarded an Arjuna Award in 2004 and Padma Shri in 2012, he is also the first Paralympian to receive these honours. He returned back to the Paralympics after 12 years, i.e, after 2004 Athens Paralympics because F46 event didn’t featured in the last two Paralympics.
Rajasthan Govt announces Rs 75 lakhs, a 200 sq metre plot in Jaipur and 25 Bigha land in Ganganagar for Devendra Jhajharia. Twitter was also supporting their Gold medal winning Paralympian and a lot of celebrities, sportsmen, politicians and social media influencers congratulated him.
