Indian Cricket Team gifted a thrilling victory to the fans present at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, making the India Vs England 2nd ODI, one of the most memorable and dominance defining matches in recent past. While Yuvraj Singh played an exceptional comeback innings and scored his personal best, MS Dhoni also started a new chapter by scoring a career defining century against England.
More than 700 runs were scored during the match and when India lost 3 quick wickets on just 25 runs, we never thought of seeing such high scoring game. At the end of 1st innings, India gave a target of an imposing 381 runs to England. Considering England’s performance in One Day Internationals, nobody expected them to show a fighting spirit but Cricket is not a game of expectations and the visitors put up a fine performance during the chase, reaching 366 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs and Virat Kohli led Indian team claimed the series by 2-0, making the third and the final ODI just a formality.
Here are some of the statistical highlights from India Vs England 2nd ODI:
- India has now registered the most number of 350+ runs innings in ODIs, 23 to be exact and went past South Africa (22), the former record holder.
- Yuvraj Singh scored the highest individual score (150) by an Indian batsman against England, surpassing the legend Sachin Tendulkar. Interestingly, it was his personal best and the 7th highest score by any batsman against England.
- MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh registered the highest fourth wicket stand against England in World Cricket by partnering for 256 runs. The partnership was also the second highest fourth wicket stand in ODI history.
- Yuvraj and Dhoni became the fifth Indian pair to register their 10th 100+ runs partnership in ODIs and 7th overall for having 3000 or more runs between them.
- MS Dhoni became the second Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to complete 4000 ODI runs.
- MS Dhoni became the first Indian to score more than 200 sixes (203 to be exact) in One Day Internationals while Yuvraj Singh took his tally to 152 sixes, the fourth most by an Indian batsman.
- This was the 3rd instance of two Indian batsmen scoring a hundred each against England in the same match.
- MS Dhoni scored his 10th ODI century which was also the first by an Indian wicketkeeper against England.
- Virat Kohli became the third Indian captain to win his debut series as a full time captain.
- A total of 747 runs were scored in the India Vs England 2nd ODI which was the fourth highest aggregate in One Day Internationals. The top three being 872 SA v Aus at Joburg in 2006, 825 Ind v SL at Rajkot in 2009 and 763 NZ v Eng at Oval in 2015.
- England has now lost 21 ODIs in the last 25 they have played, winning 3 matches and one being a tie.
The last match of the series will be played at the historic Eden Gardens on 22nd January 2017. While Virat Kohli will be looking forward for a complete whitewash, Eoin Morgan would need to up his team’s game to prevent complete humiliation. However, by fighting till the last moment and coming very close to a historic run chase, England has showed that their lineup is capable of giving some mind boggling performances and they shouldn’t be underestimated.
