Giving two hoots to the sportsman spirit, two fellow wrestlers added banned substances to Narsingh Yadav’s food in order to secure his disqualification from the solitary 74-kg Rio berth.
In a scene straight out of some Indian soap opera, a youth who is suspected to be the brother of an international wrestler in the super-heavyweight category, has confessed to trying to adulterate Yadav’s food supplements with a banned substance. His suspicious presence around Yadav’s room has been confirmed by the cook.
Meanwhile, there have been protests in his native village near Varanasi in his support where his mother has reportedly said that Narsingh never even had tea to boost his performance let alone any steroids.
Narsingh Yadav had provided a blood sample on July 5 before leaving for Spain for a preparatory match ahead of the Rio games. NADA, India’s anti-doping agency later confirmed that both his A and B samples had tested positive for a banned steroid.
Though Nada was hesitant in making a public announcement, the Wrestling Federation of India confirmed this news to the media. There was little hope then that the wrestler will be heading to Rio for the Olympics.
News has just come in that Narsingh has failed a second dope test and his food supplements have also not been tampered with. A source in the Wrestling Federation of India told the media that the same banned anabolic steroid, methandienone, as that found in the first test has been detected again.
This brings down any hope of the wrestler regaining access to the Rio games.
He was chosen over Sushil Kumar and would be replaced by Parveen Rana in the 74 kg category in a move which has been approved by the United World Wrestling.
