Mahesh Sharma, the Union Tourism Minister said that his skirt remark was just an advisory. He had earlier advised tourists not to wear skirts in small towns and his remark stirred up a controversy. He also said that he is no one to advise anyone on what clothes one has to wear.
Regarding his skirt remark, he said that it is just an advisory given by him when a holy place is being visited. He said that you can call it moral policing but this is just an advisory given by the tourism ministry.
An advisory pamphlet of dos and don’ts list which will be given to the tourists at the airport on arrival had this advice as a part of the list.
The Union Tourism Minister also asked tourists to not to wander out alone at night in small towns.
The minister told that the Tourism ministry provides welcome kits to all the tourists when they land at the airport. The kit consists a card with dos and don’ts, such as, do not wear skirts; take a picture of the registration number of the vehicle you use and send it to a friend; do not venture out alone at night in small towns.
