Around 17 persons were killed when as a bus fell into a water pit near Ratlam District in Madhya Pradesh on Friday. A rescue operation is still going on and the tally of dead people may increase.
The bus was carrying around 40 people and was on its way to Mandsaur when the accident happened. Eyewitnesses have reported that the bus was moving at a very high speed and the bus lost grip going into a turn and fell into a gorge infused with water.
Additional Superintendent of Ratlam Police, Prashant Choube said that the bus fell into a pit which was dug to store earthen material which is used in making roads. The pit was deserted for a long time and rain water got filled in it, making it a small lake. The driver lost control of the speeding bus which resulted in the accident. Around 17 people were reported as dead while 13 others were rescued in injured condition.
The injured were referred to a nearby hospital and rescue operation is still going on with the help of local residents.
