1. Jallikattu to be Organised in Tamil Nadu Soon
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam urged people to withdraw protest against the Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu on Friday and said that the bull-taming sport will be organised in the state in a day or two. A draft ordinance has already been created to pave way for the sport has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs. A delegation of 49 All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam legislators which includes 37 MPs from Lok Sabha, will meet Rajnath Singh today, to take up the matter.
Musician and Oscar-winning composer, A. R. Rahman announced a fast on Friday in order to support pro-jallikattu protests while prominent Tamil actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Surya, Vijay, Ajith Kumar and Vishal have also supported the protest.
2. SP Denies Alliance With RLD, Confirms Tie-up With Congress
The ruling Samajwadi Party rubbished the claims of a ‘maha-gathbandhan’ (grand alliance) between SP, Rashtriya Lok Dal and Congress to fight against BJP in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh. SP national vice-president Kiranmoy Nanda said that the party will forge an alliance with Congress only and out of the 403 seats, the latter will contest on 103 seats.
3. Delhi Police Chief Alok Verma Appointed as new CBI Director
Delhi Police Commissioner, Alok Verma was appointed as the new Central Bureau of Investigation Director by a three member panel consisting of PM Narendra Modi, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Chief Justice JS Khehar. The 1979-batch Indian Police Service officer, has served as Delhi Police chief of for the past 11 months and will now head CBI for the next two years.
4. Banks Will Report Deposits Over Rs 10 Lakh to IT Department
Income Tax Department has asked banks to report deposits aggregating to Rs 10 lakh or more in any account (except current account and time deposits), as well as cash payments worth Rs 1 lakh or more on credit card bills, in a year. Earlier IT department asked banks to report all cash deposits amounting to Rs 2.5 lakh or more made in one or more accounts of the same person during November 9 to December 30, 2016.
5. 2 Held For Molesting a Woman in Bengaluru
A couple of days after Bengaluru was named as the most dynamic city in the world, police has nabbed T. Uttappa (Ricky) and Ayub Ali, a Yemeni for groping and molestiong a woman outside a pub at Brigade Road, on 13th January 2017. During the investigation, police found a CCTV footage from a camera installed at the pub which helped them in identifying and tracing the culprits.
6. Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Validate Divorces Granted by Church Courts
The apex court on Thursday rejected plea to validate divorces granted under the Christian Personal Law and stated that it cannot override the existing Divorce Act. Since the power for ‘dissolution’ of marriage has been vested with the court, any other authority, including ecclesiastical tribunal cannot be allowed to exercise the same power.
7. Market Opens with a Fall, Indian Rupee Recovers
BSE’s Benchmark Sensex fell by 80.82 points and reached 27,227.78 during the early trade on Friday while Indian Rupee gained 10 paise against US Dollar and the value of green currency stood at 68.03.
