1. Akhilesh Yadav Wins ‘Cycle Symbol’
Election Commission on Monday handed over the Samajwadi Party’s ‘cycle symbol’ to the faction lead by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav after hearing all representations from both the UP CM’s side and the faction led by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. Congress leader Kapil Sibal represented Akhilesh Yadav’s case and said that the part symbol should be allocated to his client as he is the current party president and further has the support of majority of MLA’s.
2. Arvind Kejriwal Gets Notice From EC for Promoting Bribery
The Election Commission issued a notice to Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi’s CM, Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly promoting bribery and violating the code of conduct during his party’s election campaign in Goa. During a rally on 8th January, Arvind Kejriwal asked voters to accept the money offered by Congress and BJP but vote only for Aam Aadmi Party.
3. Home Ministry Asks BSF to Submit Report on Poor Quality Food
Border Security Force (BSF) got an extension of 2 days from Union Home Ministry for submitting a new report on allegations about the quality of food being served to troops. The extension came after the ministry rejected the interim report as it had many contradictions and it further rubbished the allegations made by the soldier.
4. Istanbul Reina Nightclub Attacker Arrested
The suspect who shot dead 39 people, including 27 foreigners, on 1st January at a famous nightclub named Reina in Istanbul, was arrested by state police from Esenyurt district in Ankara along with four other people on Monday. The suspect was identified as Abdulkadir Masharipov, an Uzbek national, and is further believed to be a member of the Islamic State group. He has been taken into custody and investigators will question him about the Reina Nightclub attack.
5. Eight Policemen Killed in Egypt Terror Attack
At least eight policemen were killed and three were injured in an attack by Islamist militants on a police checkpoint in Egypt’s New Valley area on Monday. Local media reported that the attack took place around 8.15 p.m. at the Nabq checkpoint, more than 600 kilometers (370 miles) south-west of Cairo. Two of the attackers were killed in the encounter while no terrorist group has taken the responsibility of this attack.
6. Five Terror Suspects Arrested in Myanmar
Five terror suspects were captured by the security forces after a two-day fatal armed attack by these suspects on police and soldiers in Myanmar’s Rakhine area. They have confessed about their part in the armed attacks at Nga Khura and Kyikanpyin villages in October 2016. They further admitted giving monetary aid and recruiting new members for a terrorist group.
7. Market Opens on a Positive Note as Sensex Gains 72 Points
Extending its rally, BSE’s Benchmark Sensex came to 27,360.47 after gaining 72.30 points due to increased buying by domestic institutional investors and earnings by TCS, Infosys and other blue chip companies. NSE’s Nifty also gained 18.50 points and remained above the 8400 mark by being at 8431.30. US Dollar weakened by 5 paise against Indian Rupee and traded at 68.05 due to increased selling of the green currency by exporters and banks.
