Adar Poonawalla was born on 14th January 1981 to his father Cyrus S. Poonawalla, also known as the ‘Vaccine King Of India’, and mother Villoo Poonawalla. He took his early education from The Bishop’s School which is located in the city of Pune, after which he went to St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury, and then finally to the University of Manchester. After his graduation, he joined the Serum Institute of India in 2001, founded by his father.

In the year 2011, he became the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India.
