Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Bob Dylan for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”, as mentioned by the Swedish Academy.
Dylan’s win has been somewhat of a surprise for many, even though he was mentioned to be in the run for the prize for many years, which has been taken as a joke for many years now. But he is the first songwriter ever to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature (in the public’s eye). However, some people are missing out on the fact that India’s very own Rabindranath Tagore was also a songwriter which makes him the first songwriter to win a Nobel Prize ever.

Bob Dylan is the 259th American to win a Nobel Prize across all the areas. He is the 9th American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature after Toni Morrison in 1993. America as a country has been an active country in terms of receiving Nobel Prizes, however, it hasn’t received much critical acclaim from the Nobel committee for their literary work.
He has won 11 Grammys and an Oscar in 2000 for his song, Things Have Changed which has been used in the film Wonder Boys. He had been a key element in the 1960’s alternative folk movement and very popular songwriter and performer, for most of his life. He has also been actively on a tour since the 1980s, aptly named ‘Never Ending Tour’ which shows his sheer love for what he do.
