The Ban culture is nothing new when it comes to the film fraternity of India. The censor board or government always seeks to take a step backward when it comes to telecast or release a movie that has controversial or experimental content. The main motive to ban such movies is not to hurt anyone sentiments or prevent the society from chaos.
The censor board is quite restricted when it comes to experimenting the creativity of the directors or writers. Masala and the senseless drama is always welcome, but the thought provoking or exploring topics are not their favorite. Banning these movies will not change the mindset of people instead we need to broaden the narrow-mindedness of our society.
Here is the list of some banned movies that were banned in Indian due to its controversial content:
- Unfreedom (2015)
Unfreedom is a modern-day thriller. It is a lesbian love story entangled within an Islamic terrorism-related angle. The censor board couldn’t digest the nudity and two taboos in one package. The love making scenes between the protagonists were too much for the board and the movie was accused of igniting unnatural passions.
Pardey me rehne do?
- Gandu (2010)
The Bengali movie created a lot of buzzes and became the talk of the town because of it’s bold scenes. It was a rap musical movie with a lot of oral sex scenes and nudity. It was shot in Black and White format and if you are expecting anything else from a movie named ‘Gandu’, you are definitely going to be disappointed. It was banned because it ‘defied Indian sensibilities’.
As if nobody knows that.
- Kama Sutra – A Tale Of Love
India is a land from where the art of love making originated. It was strange to see a ban on the subject that talks about the art and culture that originated in India. The movie was considered as immoral and unethical for the Indian audiences.
Like really? Way too much!
- The Pink Mirror
Another movie on the list that was banned on the basis of homosexuality. The Pink Mirror also portrayed and had content about transsexuals and transgenders. Again it was clearly too much for the censor board and they ultimately banned the movie.
Wow! Something new. Huh!
- Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Even the famous adventure movie series did not escape from the clutches of the Indian censor board. The movie was accused to depict Hinduism, Indian culture, and traditions in a bad light. Censor Board had a strong enough reason to ban the movie.
Please! Give me a Break here.
- Final Solution
Final Solution is a documentary based on the 2002 Gujarat communal riots. It was shot by Rakesh Sharma and because the religion has always been a sensitive issue in India, the censor board banned it. The censor board feared that it can provoke the riots once again.
Then why everyone does not have a perfect love story?
- The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Indian Censor board suggested some cuts in the Hollywood movie, but the director refused to do so and ultimately the censor board got a chance to ban the film. The mystery-thriller movie depicted scenes of intense torture and rape and that resulted in the film being banned.
Everyday story it is.
- Fifty Shades Of Grey
When Indian Censor Board did not give a pass to the ‘Kama-Sutra’ based on an indigenous theme, you can definitely forget to get a green chit for a sexuality themed film from the other country. The erotic movie with BDSM (a sexual fetish) theme was really hard to digest for the censor board.
Not a chance.
- Miss Lovely
Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia the theme of the movie was C-grade industry. It depicts the compromises female actors make for a few minutes of fame. The movie is one of the Anurag Kashyap’s camps and also stars cult actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The experimental movie was banned by Indian censor board.
Whoa! They banned Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
