Time’s Up is definitely one of the biggest movements of 2018, where a bunch of strong women from Hollywood is coming together to fight the disparity and sexual misconducts they’re facing in the industry. The movement first came to the forefront on the Golden Globes 2018 red carpet when the women in Hollywood decided to come decked in black. This was almost done as a way to mourn the current situation in the industry, post-Weinstein, and other scandals.
The same was planned for 71st British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) where celebrities came sporting black to lend their support to the Time’s Up campaign.
While almost all of the London present at the red carpet looked ravishing in black, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, went on to become a glaring exception. Middleton attended the event with her husband, Prince William while slipping into a Jenny Packham olive-green gown, along with a black ribbon belt.
But how come the royal from the palace, who’s known for her philanthropy work all over the world, missed the memo on this movement? Many are considering her attire to almost be a non-approval on the entire movement, however, there’s more to the story than just this.
Members of the royal family are restricted from expressing their views on any political campaign. They are also not supposed to not make any political statements and neither wear black unless they are attending a funeral or Remembrance Day. Middleton too is bound by the same restrictions. Which means it’s not necessarily that the royal family disagrees with Time’s Up, they’re just unable to discuss per royal protocol.
But, who can forget? We are living in the age of social media and instant judgements which is why many right away jumped on the bandwagon of bashing Middleton on her choice of garment at the event. However, some have come forward to duly notice her huge waist black belt which might be her way of showing solidarity with the movement, while being low-key about it. Many even noted that Middleton wearing a certain dress or not should never be taken as her stance on an issue.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions to Kate Middleton not wearing black at BAFTA.

Could be a number of reasons #KateMiddleton seems not into #BAFTAs2018 (to you) – pregnancy is tiring too, don’t forget 🙂

People hurling abuse at Kate Middleton for not wearing black to the #BAFTAs need to remember that as a member of the Royal family, she can’t show support towards a political affiliation or bias.

Kate Middleton looks so beautiful in that dress and glad she didn’t follow the black dress code #BAFTAs pic.twitter.com/aQgU0sI1rf

The women on twitter tonight shaming the duchess for wearing dark green need to give their pretend feminist heads a shake!! The hypocrisy in your tweets are ridiculous! How about build women up not tear them down #BAFTAs #KateMiddleton

Yes, Kate Middleton didn't wear black, but the royal family aren't allowed to make political statements (even though I personally don't see standing up for sexual harassment as a political statement). But she did have black accessories and she didn't wear a bright colour. #BAFTAS pic.twitter.com/5GoPneQ50W

Everyone needs to calm down about Kate Middleton not wearing black. She’s NOT ALLOWED TO! Members of the royal family aren’t allowed to be political or any part of activism. #BAFTAs

Ahhh nice to see the feminists out in full force tonight criticising Kate Middleton for having the cheek to CHOOSE whatever she wants to wear tonight! I think she looks gorgeous, this movement doesn't give you a right to dictate how people dress #Katemiddleton

Everything said and done, Kate Middleton undoubtedly looked absolutely mesmerising at the event. Her glow up, all thanks to her pregnancy, is absolutely unreal and one just can’t overlook it. This is Kate Middleton’s third pregnancy, however, everything from the due-date to the gender of baby has till now been kept a secret.
