Remember ‘3 Idiots’ in which Aamir Khan (The Perfectionist) played a character of brilliant scientist ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’? Well, Aamir for sure did an amazing job in the blockbuster movie but do you know that his character was inspired by a real-life engineer from Leh Sonam Wangchuk? Well, it was and Sonam Wangchuk is almost as good as Phunsukh was in the movie.
Wangchuk recently won the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise 2016 on Tuesday at Los Angeles. He is the brainchild behind many scientific innovations and grabbed this award for his project, ‘Ice Stupas’.
Rolex Awards are known as a coveted philanthropic programme that appreciates and acknowledge the efforts of such people who are trying to make a difference to mankind and the world.
This 50-year old engineer is known to be resolute and this genius created ‘Ice Stupas’ so that the problem of lack of water for agriculture in the desert landscapes of the western Himalayas can be resolved.
He created these artificial glaciers as he was certain that if he would freeze the huge seasonal outflow of glacial water, the villages in Ladakh could be improved.
Not only that, Wangchuk is also working on tapping meltwaters to build artificial glaciers so that he can help the farmers of arid Himalayan highlands.
In a statement, the engineer said that he will use the funds of the Rolex Award for his project and also promote his artificial glaciers as a Desert-Greening technique and Climate-change adaptation.
We bow down to Wangchuk’s efforts!! You are making mankind proud!!
