On Thursday, the world saw another magnificent victory of Michael Phelps as he won 200-meter individual medley at the Rio Olympics. He now holds 22 gold medals and with this one, he became the most-decorated Olympian of all time.
The final showdown was between the longtime rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte but it turned out that the individual medley was already Phelps’ as he was unstoppable at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
Phelps finished almost two seconds ahead of Japan’s Kosuke Hagino, who secured the second position, to win his fourth gold medal. Phelps finished in 1 minute 54.66 seconds and won his fourth consecutive Olympics where Lochte faded during the final leg to place fifth.
Michael Phelps owns 26 Olympic medals, out of which 22 are gold. With this win, he broke a 2,000-year-old Olympic record which was set by Leonidas of Rhodes in 152 B.C. Leonidas won three different events in four consecutive Olympics.
