Usually speaking, there are three kinds of generalised statements that one gets to hear about us Indians. First up, it is said that we are kind and large-hearted people who care for the plight of the others. True! Right? Second, we are a bit loud and energetic, at times, a bit too much for the pleasure of the others. And third, that we can be unruly.
Truth be told, from what appears to be happening in the state of Rajasthan, it can be said that the third statement holds rather true for us Indians. Yes, we are indeed unruly and often care little about following rules and in showing discipline.
And if in case you are quite simply taken aback by the statement and consider it a bit rude, then do nothing else but read a breaking news development from the heart of Rajasthan, India’s largest state (area-wise).
Ever wondered about the general behaviour of the public there in these trying times marred by the COVID 19 stress?
Well, a news report suggests that, at least, 10,000 individuals have been found guilty of breaching COVID 19 norms and that too on a daily basis. Now, if someone does not find this shocking, then the question is- what is the definition of shocking?
The most important thing that one has been told, retold, and then told repeatedly during these tense times is to simply pay adherence to the following:
Do not step out until very necessary (read- avoid needless meetings or rollicking around)
Practice social distancing
Wear masks and wash your hands regularly and use sanitisers
Yet, it’s rather strange as to what’s transpiring down in Rajasthan, a state famous for its rich cultural values and iconic heritage.
That being said, now here’s a shocker as per the state records pertaining to the weeks before April 23, 2021:
The state police department has issued data that reveals between April 1 and 22- as many as 2.21 lakh individuals were fined for violating the COVID 19 norms.
Now to draw an analogy from a student’s school report card, that’s a D grade or probably an F for sheer lack of discipline.
A statement published by the Director General of Police (DGP) Mr. ML Lather stated the following with regards to the COVID 19 situation in Rajasthan:
“Effective action is being taken by the Rajasthan Police under the provisions set for prevention from covid. In order to contain the virus, it is necessary to wear masks, maintain the prescribed physical distance and take other precautions including cleaning of hands.”
Rules first, right? A simple thing has to be done and trust us, it doesn’t require an awe-inspiring or incredible effort- one must follow the COVID 19 norms strictly and genuinely.
Furthermore, what’s incredibly shocking is the sheer amount of fines that have been imposed on the violators for the said period of time. Well, believe it or not, but fines worth INR 3.38 crores have been slapped on those who flouted the norms.

There’s another troubling scenario across Rajasthan: many are found consuming liquor in public places. The same are fined Rs. 500 for the misdeed.
Perhaps no better time to raise one’s game and improve one’s societal behaviour than now Rajasthan, right?
