On Thursday Mumbai was put on high alert as five masked men carrying weapons were spotted by some school children. These men were spotted close to a naval base in Uran in Navi Mumbai. Searched operations were launched and NSG ( National Security Guard ) commandos were deployed in three locations and another team of NSG is on standby in India’s capital Delhi.
After an army camp at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir was attacked by suspected Pakistan-based militants, the search operations involving Coast Guard patrol boats and Navy choppers were launched in Mumbai.
Captain DK Sharma, the spokesperson of Indian Navy stated that Navi Mumbai is at a high state of alert after suspicious activity was reported by some school children.
Police closed down the schools before conducting the searches in the area, the Navy base of Uran is about 50km far from Mumbai. The police have increased surveillance and put the 91 landing points along the city’s coast.
In 2008, a group of Lashkar-e-Taiba militants carried out one of the worst terror attacks in the India and the vulnerability of Mumbai’s coastline was exposed. The 2008 attack left many people dead and injured. The security has been increased at the Raj Bhawan, the Gateway of India, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, the offshore drilling rig at Bombay High Court and other establishments near the sea.
