Benefits of Jojoba Oil For Skin

While using skin products or cosmetics you must have come across Jojoba oil as an ingredient. It is one of the most common ingredients which you can find in your moisturizing creams, anti-aging creams, face washes, facemasks, sunscreams, body lotions and many more products. So why do we see jojoba oil in so many skin related products? This is because of the benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin. Not only skin in fact it’s widely used in hair treatments also.  Its presence is inevitable in the skin products be it in cosmetics, topical and transdermal products.

Before we go further ahead to study the benefits of Jojoba oil for skin , let’s learn something about Jojoba oil first. The Jojoba oil is extracted from the nut of the jojoba plant. The jojoba plant is a shrub which is native to Southern Arizona, Southern California and Mexico.

It is used as a replacement of whale oil , which was banned in 1971 in the U.S.A. Jojoba oil is an edible oil but it is non digestible (which means it will pass out our body without any changes; similar to Steatorrhea). The Jojoba oil is rich in long chain fatty acids and isopropyl jojobate (alcohol) with a very small amount of triglyceride esters. This composition is the reason for the extremely high shelf life of the jojoba oil as compared to other essential oils.

The benefits of Jojoba Oil for Skin:

1. Moisturizing Effect of Jojoba Oil on the Skin:

Jojoba oil attracts water to the top layer of the skin thus keeping the skin hydrated. This also prevents bacterial infections, acne formation. It also prevents dandruff formation on the scalp. This is the reason many shampoo and other hair products flaunt jojoba oil as their main ingredient on the cover or packing for its deep moisturizing effect.

2. Antioxidant Effects of Jojoba Oil:

Jojoba oil contains vitamin E and this helps in fighting skin against the oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is caused by various pollutants and toxins.

3. Sebum Production in the Skin:

Jojoba oil on a molecular level is a wax. Its composition is very similar to the sebum our skin releases naturally. So when one applies the jojoba oil on the skin, it sends signals to the brain that no more production of sebum is required for the purpose of hydration. This function of jojoba oil helps in preventing formation of acne by clogged skin pores.

4. Collagen Synthesis:

Studies have shown that jojoba oil helps in the synthesis of collagen in our body. Collagen is a kind of protein which is found in skin, joints and cartilage in our body. With increasing age the collagen level decreases in our body. But using jojoba oil helps in the synthesis of collagen thus making your skin look younger and brighter.

5. Anti-Inflammatory Property of Jojoba Oil:

It has been seen that jojoba oil is very effective in treating many cases of skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema etc. Jojoba oil application helps in reducing the dryness, itching, flaking, redness and other symptoms. This is possible because of anti-inflammatory properties of the jojoba oil.

6. Effective against Sunburns:

In some cases of sunburn redness and itching may be present too. Jojoba oil helps in relieving all these symptoms thus helps in treating sunburns.

This is possible because jojoba oil contains vitamin E and Vitamin E is known to help in wound healing. Therefore jojoba oil becomes an effective agent in the process of scar healing as well reducing scar marks.

8. Anti-Microbial:

Jojoba oil helps in preventing the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms on the skin. Due to this property jojoba oil helps in treating acne, healing scars and wounds. It acts like a natural preservative for the skin.

So, overall jojoba oil is a very effective and potent oil in terms of benefits for the skin. Not only skin jojoba oil is used extensively in hair products and hair care treatments too because of its moisturizing effect.
