17 Salman Rushdie Quotes: On The Complexity Of Life And Our Society

Salman Rushdie, a man of great words and greater achievements, as well as, controversies turns 74. Born on 19th June 1947, in Mumbai (then Bombay), Rushdie has been described as the master of the art of hyper-realism, which has swooned people from the past 40 years.

While Rushdie started his career, as a writer, in 1975 with his first novel ‘Grimus’, a fantasy and science fiction novel, it was his second work that completely changed his life as an author. ‘Midnight’s Children’, published in 1981, tells the story of two children who were born at the same midnight when India gained its independence from the British Colonial. Many have gone out to summarise Midnight’s Children as a love letter to India and the book helped Rushdie to gain International acclaim along with various prestigious awards. From a Booker Prize for Fiction to the Booker Of Bookers, Midnight’s Children can simply be chronicled as one of The Books of this century.

However, Rushdie is not just known for his books and writing skills and brilliant story lines, it’s the art of always being surrounded with controversies that have left his mark on the history. Salman Rushdie’s ‘Satanic Verses’ resulted in a weird kind of disarray around the globe. While many countries banned it, Rushdie got something much serious to look forward to, Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini released a fatwa against him. This led to him hiding for a very long time and a story worth knowing for everyone who ever doubts the freedom of being a writer. This ‘fatwa’ changed his life, and no one till now can confirm whether it was changed for the good or the worse.

But, as the author turns 70 and has given his readers some 19 novels (while the 20th is on its way), we decided to gather some 17 Quotes by the man of the day. His work has been metamorphic for many, there are quotes that one can always look forward to for some inspiration or simply a calm moment.
