First-Ever Wildlife Census To Be Held In Asola Batti Sanctuary, Highlight On Leopards

With a key focus on leopards, among the world’s most enigmatic and enthralling spotted beasts, the Asola-Bhatti sanctuary is due to conduct what will be its first-ever census. Established over three and a half decades back and located in the southern Delhi ridge of the Aravalli hills range, the Asola Bhatti sanctuary is indeed one of the most precious footprints of the wildlife here in the Delhi National Capital Territory region.

The said census, it is expected, will take place right after summer in the months ahead.

The first-ever census at the Asola-Bhatti wildlife sanctuary will be, of course, conducted by the Delhi Forest Department where one of the focal points is to be leopards, as confirmed by officials working with the body.

As a matter of fact, the maiden census for the Asola-Bhatti wildlife sanctuary will take place in July 2021. This brings us to the question as to how long will the same continue (when can the results of the same be expected)?

To that end, it’s important to know that in order to arrive at the full results of the said census, it will take not less than three full months.

That being said, here is a quote from the Deputy Conservator of Forests (South Division), “It is one of the priorities for the department this year. We will try and make it a regular affair. Yearly censuses will help ascertain changes in wildlife in the area.”

Lying on the Delhi-Haryana border, the sanctuary covers an area no fewer than 32.71 sq kilometre. But like with every census, there’s a key underlying function or objective so what is the central aim of the census to be conducted at the Asola-Bhatti wildlife sanctuary?

With a three-fold purpose to establish how many species are present at the sanctuary (currently), how are they distributed as well as establishing the problems they face in a particular area, the census is expected to provide some telling answers.

A forest official necessitated the highlight of the function and shared, “For example, sometimes, jackal sightings are restricted to a particular area. It could be due to some physical barrier or disturbance. Scientific interventions will be made to resolve such issues and to improve wildlife habitat with the help of census data!”

But make no mistake. While leopards are to be the focal point of the census, it is not that the other species are not important- the other species of birds are also of the same importance. The idea, therefore, is to ensure that no animal is neglected. And just how does it come to aid the leopards?

The vital wild cat shall be provided with water and food resources with a focus being to discover new ideas to ensure how can it be settled well into the habitat.
