Lionel Messi was the man of the hour during the recent El Clasico where Barcelona recorded an extra time victory over Real Madrid by 3-2 and burst open the La Liga title race once again. Before his first goal in the 33rd minute that equalized the tally in the first half, he was left on the ground bleeding after being hit by an elbow while attempting a header.
With a cotton ball in his mouth and anger in his heart, Lionel Messi pierced through Real Madrid’s midfield and scored his first goal of the day. But that was not it for Lionel Messi as he was just a goal away from becoming the first ever Barcelona player to score 500 goals for the club and what’s better than scoring it against their arch rivals, Real Madrid.
Lionel Messi’s 500th Barca goal was definitely a masterpiece as the trail started from their own box, pierced through the midfield, leaving Marcelo shocked and Cristiano Ronaldo after battling down the best of Real’s defense.
The moment people start questioning Lionel Messi’s future at Barcelona, he comes back, scores, takes his team to a victory and shut them up. What has made Lionel Messi a Legend is, his capability to rise again and again after falling and that has made him Barcelona’s biggest assets.
However, 2016/17 season has not been the best one for the Catalans as we have seen their defense falling short in almost every big game and their list to Juventus and Paris Saint Germans was definitely a proof of that.
Moreover, a cloud of uncertainty is still hovering over Messi’s future at Barcelona as his contract extension has not been signed until now. While the reason is still uncertain, rumors suggest that Lionel Messi is asking for a huge raise and a complete overhaul of his team.
After the El Clasico victory, such rumors are again doing the round and this time, they have disclosed more details about Lionel Messi demands. According to Spanish Daily Diario Gol, the Argentine’s first concern is to ship away some deadwood from the club. While the likes of Jeremy Mathieu, Andre Gomes and Arda Turan, already heading towards the exit door, Paco Alcacer and Aleix Vidal have also failed to meet Messi’s expectations.
He also wants four new singing in the upcoming transfer window, first being a right-back due to the struggles of Sergi Roberto and secondly a much needed central defender. A proper replacement for Xavi is also on the cards as Andres Iniesta have struggled to create magic in the mid-field at the age of 32. And finally, a striker is what Lionel Messi is looking for, in order to lessen the pressure on Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Lionel Messi also wants the funds, yet to be acquired after selling six players, to be used in getting new and young talent at Camp Nou. Meanwhile, Luis Enrique has also announced his retirement from the club by the end of this season and Barcelona might have to shell a huge sum to cover up Messi’s contract, his demands and a manager.
Everything said and done, Barcelona hasn’t been able to add freshness to the squad for a couple of years now and with age being a factor in their struggles this year, Lionel Messi might have a point here.
But will Barcelona be able to meet Lionel Messi’s demands of a complete overhaul, next season? The answer is simple. They have to!! The Argentine is also leading the race to La Liga Pichichi award and the European Golden Shoe race, not meeting his demands is certainly not the right thing to do, as of now.
