The first professional football coach of India Amal Dutta passes away at his residence on Sunday. The country’s first full-time ‘diamond’ coach was 86-year-old and was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.
He was bedridden and had stopped eating. Dutta breathed his last around 8 p.m. on Sunday before the doctors could be summoned.
During his playing days, Dutta was a dependable midfielder and represented India in 1954 Asian Games. He emerged as one of the most important figures of Indian football and was also the in charge of Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan and East Bengal.
Dutta won almost all the major trophies in Indian football, in the late 80s, he also served as the technical director of Indian national team. He was known for his kind and gentle behaviour and was the brain behind Mohun Bagan’s 4-1-2-1-2 formation aka Diamond system which took the club to another level.
Indian football lost a precious gem, it is a great loss and may his soul rest in peace.
