A plane flying from Bolivia, which was carrying more than 72 people including Brazilian football team Chapecoense has crashed on its approach to the city of Medellin in Colombia. The details are yet to be disclosed but according to some reports, there are survivors.
The chartered plane was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members on board including the members of the Chapecoense football team. The team was due to play Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional in Medellin on Wednesday. The final match has been suspended now.
A British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane started its journey at 3.35pm in the afternoon local time in Sao Paulo, Brazil and made a stop in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, later it set off for Colombia.
According to the reports, the plane crashed before midnight local time (05:00 GMT) in a mountainous area outside the city.
Medellin’s Mayor Federico Gutierrez said, “It’s a tragedy of huge proportions”. He added that it is possible that there are survivors.
He also said that ambulance, rescuers, and medicinal assistance are on their way. The reason of the crash is still unclear but it appears that the weather was bad in the area.
People are advised to stay away from the crash site so that rescue workers can move freely and save lives.
