7 Most Embarrassing Tweets By Footballers That Will Make You Go ‘WTF’

Twitter has been the perennial communication platform for celebrities to join their fans and vice versa. And that is the same reason why I joined Twitter. As uncool as it may sound to many, Yes, I was interested in what the Kardashian Clan is up to or what is the next hilarious opinion that has come out from Donald Trump’s handle or what renowned athletes had in their breakfast. But as soon as I joined Twitter, I realized that there is much more to the social media platform and once can remain updated with happenings all over the world as well as some ‘untimely spills or rants’.

The last two add-ons have kept me loyal to Twitter and during my journey, I came across some of the most hilarious tweets ever. However, during my upbringing, I was always told to share my knowledge especially if a can be a reason of a quick laugh. And, since football, the biggest sport in the world, has been in the headlines due to the upcoming transfer window and the Likes of Cristiano Ronaldo as well Lionel Messi being subjected to allegations of tax evasion, I thought of gathering 7 Most Embarrassing Tweets By Footballers That Will Make You Go ‘WTF’.

As brute as they are seen on the field, they two are humans and they too make mistakes, however, by the end of this, you will be forced to question yourself, whether these are mistakes or that’s everything they know and the tweets were intentional?

1. Saido Berahino

You might not have heard his name very often or even never, for his performance on the pitch, but Saido Berahino made a name for himself when West Brom’s chief Jeremy Peace refused to let him go to Tottenham for a £23 million bid. Out of frustration, he tweeted something that due to the grammatical error, twisted the meaning.

2. Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole was considered one of the best full-backs, during his time at Chelsea, however, his reputation off the pitch wasn’t as clean. In 2012, in an FA investigation into the John Terry racial abuse case, one of the commissions doubted Cole’s statement in the court in defense of his teammate. After that Ashley Cole took to Twitter to wrote, “Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFTWATS.”

While his intentions behind the statement were clear, but those were not the right words to use and he was fined £90,000.

3. Jan Vertonghen

During the 2016/17 season, Vertonghen emerged as one of the best defenders in Premier League division, however, he was the subject of all jokes in the year 2012, when he tweeted, “Little update: We are s***!!!”

Whether he was talking about his team’s performance or humanity as a whole, still remains a question because in both the cases, Vertonghen too will be part of the group.

4. Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan gave his fans a mini heart attack after he tweeted about joining Arsenal before the US tour. But fans later realized that he was just having fun with his German national teammate Mesut Ozil.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo

While the Portugal might be on his way to his 5th Ballon d’Or title after having a glorious season, consisting of La Liga as well as Champions League trophies, however, he once conducted an underwear competition and took on to Twitter to congratulate the participants. The move, as expected, backfired and the Tweet was removed from his account. But the memories still remain!!

6. Wayne Rooney

Rooney is one of the most sought after footballers in the world and he has been rarely subjected to a controversy, however, as good as he is on the field, the same can not be said about his knowledge of Twitter. 18th May 2011, the Manchester United top goal scorer tagged himself to a tweet that left many thinking about what the hell is he up to?

Later we realized, he was talking about his finishing move.

7. Dele Alli

Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli unarguably a talented footballer but during his days Milton Keynes Dons as a 16-year-old, he took on to Twitter and the tweet might have given Microsoft’s marketing team, the biggest shock of their life. It was a good question though.

In short, if you are ever looking for a reason to join Twitter, public figures embarrassing themselves is a good reason to consider.
