A few days back when news struck that Williams were up for sale and that in a short span of time, they’d bundle out from the sport, one felt in a year where nothing’s gone quite right for anyone just got the worst shock of them all. But then, a few hours after that shocker, in comes the news that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has done his bit to revive the fledgling fortunes of a team that’s iconic in the standing of the fastest form of motor-racing.
So what exactly has Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff done here for Williams?
Apparently, in buying a stake of the legendary Formula 1 racing team, the famous Austrian has done his bit to revive the fortunes of a struggling outfit.
Imagine the plight of the two new talents that the team is contending with on the current grid?
What’s to become of the careers of the very fine talent George Russell and the newcomer Nicolas Latifi?
But where the team stands at the moment, then nothing’s quite gone right for a side that once had legendary drivers contending in its machinery.
Think the great Ayrton Senna. Think world champions Damon Hill and Nico Rosberg. And there are many to be honest who’ve done their fair share of racing with one of the most celebrated constructors of all time.
And then there’s this time where other than hanging out at the backend of the field, there’s just nowhere else where one might imagine the once-mighty F1 team.
Isn’t it?
How painful might this tumultuous fall have been, one wonders?
In the last two seasons, Williams have faltered pathetically for the lack of a better word. Under the leadership of Claire Williams, the team have gone from bad to worse, with all due respect and there’s really no other way to put it.
At times, for the sheer lack of effort shown by the team- one where George Russell is yet to score a point- you feel if there’s even some serious passion from the team’s end?
But where the recent events stand, then it appears that there is a tiny tot of hope in the form of some external investors who may be able to bail out the team.
Take Toto Wolff’s decision, at the end of the day!
Essentially Sports wrote on this story- The Mercedes Team Principal seems to be on an investment spree. Only last week Wolff bought shares in Aston Martin who will replace Racing Point in 2021. Now he has bought a share in the Grove-based outfit as well.

This is the second time Toto Wolff has bought a share in Williams. He previously owned a 15% stake in the Grove-based outfit until he sold it in 2014. Wolff also owns a 30% share in Mercedes.
Meanwhile, Formula 1 pundits like Mr. Peter Windsor are of the view that better days may still be around the corner for a side that have been nothing else but backmarkers in the sport for long. He’d assess, ” Good to see that Mercedes’ Toto Wolff yesterday bought back a five percent shareholding in Williams F1. The team could be heading in the right direction for the first time in a while.“
