Dewald Brevis May Seem Ready For Proteas National Duties, But Should He Be Playing That Early?

It will surely be a beautiful day when one will get to see Dewald Brevis play in the fine Proteas colours. And truthfully speaking, there’s more to it than the fact that South Africa does tend to be one’s second favourite team outside one’s own country or region.

Perhaps it may seem more of a fanboy comment. But truth certainly be told, what’ll be most exciting about when newfound batting sensation in the game, Dewald Brevis gets to play for his Proteas side, it will bring massive smiles to the face of those who can’t help but see shades of a certain Abraham Benjamin de Villiers in him.

For it’s not his fault, but that’s just how Dewald Brevis has been. It’s got to do with how he’s made.

It’s not just about the fact that much like the great batsman we’ve already compared him to, the right hander doesn’t quite stand in deep appreciation of his own shots; he doesn’t indulge in celebrations or acts vain.

But rather the ruthlessness with which he’s been found putting the bowlers to the sword that will excite us most about him. And that is something some of the best bowlers of the world, in fact, no bowler in the world, will quite like- right?

What worked wonders for Dewald Brevis, the man who emerged with no fewer than 506 runs in the 2022-bound Under-19 World Cup was the fact that his maiden IPL stint, also this year, truly presented us with a batsman who could be a hero in the times to come.

Maybe someone, whose performances with the bat for the famous MI camp augured faith that finally South Africa have found someone who can right all their wrongs in international cricket.

The one who could possibly help the team shed its choker tag.

Some of his brave innings, such as the 25-ball-49 in the IPL offered great faith about the avid youngster who seems to be absolutely fearless and didn’t seem to think twice before shunning away bowlers with that dismissive ease.

A further confirmation of his talent were the 161 runs from just 7 innings, 49 of which, as shared earlier, came in a single outing for Rohit Sharma’s team.

But all of that being told, to play franchise cricket is one thing but to actually represent your side in its national colours whilst donning the jersey is something else altogether!

Dewald Brevis may seem, and he is, incredibly ready to take the big plunge; to represent the famous bandwagon of fearless Proteas game-changers: Anrich Nortje, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma, Van Der Dussen.

But forget not that he’s all of 19. In April 2023, he will turn 20. The pressures and often excruciating challenges of international cricket are something not everyone is prepared to undergo especially at such a terribly young age where Dewald Brevis currently finds himself.

It’s like the classic statutory declaration that comes on any sensitive package or cargo box: handle with care.

Dewald Brevis, the famous top order big-hitting white-ball slaughterer is a thing of batting beauty, which will bring joys forever.

But maybe, some self-preservation and hence, “handling with care” is needed, at least, as of now.

Maybe, one would like him to go hit the nets, find more of himself at the domestic stage, and even watch from the sidelines as those currently in charge take the Proteas’ fight to the opposition. Right?

A lotus does bloom amid the clutter but what good will it ever be if it were to be suddenly subjected to an enormity of incelement and unpredictable weather. The latter is something that the great game of cricket almost always exposes a talent to- does it not?

Let the flower bloom fully first?

Meanwhile that being said, the following is what the famous South African captain had to say on the subject of the very batsman who’s caught the attention of the world by a storm:

“He’ll be treated like any other exciting, young prospect that comes on to the scene. He’ll be looked after as well as he can be. But I think he should be given time and the space to hone his game within our system and ease into the international side of things,” shared the ebullient Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma.
