Can The Full Moon Disturb Our Sleep?

Superstition or fact? Whether some people sleep worse on the night of the full moon than on other nights is controversial, even among scientists. Some studies confirm that people fall asleep with more difficulty on full moon nights than on nights without a full moon. Are we part werewolves? However, some studies cannot establish a connection between the quality of sleep and the full moon. So, Does the full moon really affect our sleep? Is full moon insomnia a real thing?

The answer is Yes, of course, the full moon can affect our sleep. But only if it shines brightly through the window. Because brightness, whether from the moon or another light source, can disturb sleep in people who are sensitive to it. Even in science, there is no consensus on whether the moon also has a negative influence on sleep. As long as there are no clear results, we assume that the full moon does not influence sleep.

Several other factors can disrupt sleep like high temperatures, noise, alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine. They can influence the sleep pattern on a full moon night or any other night for that matter. One study with positive results with regard to the effect of the full moon is that of Swiss researchers from 2013. In their study on 33 test subjects, they were able to see an aspect of the full moon that disrupts sleep. The study participants fell asleep around 5 minutes later and on average 20 minutes less than on the rest of the month.

Researchers assume that the reason for this sleep delay can be found in our ancestors. For people in the Stone Age, the brightness on full moon nights was dangerous and could even cost their lives. It is quite clear, according to the researchers, in their explanation that on a full moon night you automatically remain in a watchful position until today.

It is conceivable that people look for explanations for everything that bothers them and is unpleasant. The full moon comes in handy with sleep disorders. Just like the weather, which is also blamed for a lot of physical discomforts. It can be comforting for those affected that the full moon only looks through the window every 28 days provided the sky is cloudless.
