Fear, shame, or anger are the feelings that are linked to many different physical changes. Sometimes they become visible to others through a change in facial color. Many people blush when faced with certain situations. But Why do some people blush so much? Let’s find out.
It was considered particularly proper for young women to blush even till the end of the 19th century. The gender-specific blush of shame was socially recognized. But a lot has changed since then. People who blush often feel restricted, devalued by their environment, or not taken seriously. The problem for those affected is not the blushing itself, but your own negative assessment and the fear of rejection by others. Blushing in all its facets is primarily seen as a sign of embarrassment and weakness.
The visible changes, which can also show up as spots on the neck, in red ears or cheeks, are evaluated today by fellow human beings in different ways. Often this depends on the relationship with the person and the situation in which they blush. Interpretations of uncertainty or discomfort are common. In some situations, outsiders perceive it as sweet or cute. Sometimes blushing is seen as a sign of authenticity or proof of sensitivity which makes you likable. So what actually happens in the body when you blush?
There are many different causes of facial redness. Blushing is a physical reaction that cannot be directly influenced by the person affected. Nobody who wants to turn red or who does not want to turn red can do this directly through willpower and effort.
The most common trigger is always a mishap and an associated lightning-fast negative evaluation that generates emotional excitement and puts the body on a kind of alert. Messenger substances are released and ensure that the blood vessels are abruptly expanded.
The increased amount of blood in the capillary network of the face is perceived by outsiders as a red color of the skin. The tiny blood vessels responsible for this are less than half a millimeter under the skin and therefore appear red. The lighter the skin, the stronger the red color is visible. For many of those affected, the head, cheeks, and ears feel as if they are glowing. You will also start sweating and your heartbeat will get faster.

In principle, all people can blush. However, blushing has not been observed in animals even our closest relative, the primates. So shame or red anger seems to be something very human. It is not yet known whether more men or more women have this gift. But there are people to whom it happens more often and more intensely than others. Some of them really suffer from it. The causes include a generally increased willingness to fear, negative thinking habits, low self-esteem, a tendency to self-observation, and behavioral deficits.
The slight discomfort associated with blushing can turn into a real anxiety disorder. People who have what is known as erythrophobia avoid any situations in which they could blush and thus get deeper and deeper into a cycle of fear and uncertainty. The ‘don’t blush now’ approach doesn’t work and leads to the opposite.

On the other hand, it is advisable to breathe long and deeply, knowing that any redness will disappear after a few minutes when the body relaxes. It is also relaxing to consciously allow yourself to blush. It is also helpful to shift your attention away from the blush to a neutral topic. You can get a red face for other reasons. Physical exertion, heat, or alcohol consumption are just a few examples.
