A sinus infection is the swelling or inflammation of the sinus tissue and occurs when the sinus cavities gets infected or blocked. A person with acute sinus problem usually faces complications such as headache, sore throat, pain under the eyes, fever & cough. Here are some simple yet effective home remedies for sinus that will provide you relief from the problem.

The inflammation or the swelling causes the fluid to block in the nose which can lead to an infection. Usually, a sinus infection lasts from 8-12 weeks. Normally a doctor prescribes antibiotics, nasal sprays, and painkillers for the sinus condition, however frequent use of all these can worsen your situation.

1. Steam – Home Remedies for Sinus

Steam therapy is very effective to open the nasal passages without putting too much on your nose. You can add 3-4 drops of eucalyptus oil and 2 drops of peppermint oil to a hot water vessel and take this steam by covering your head with a towel. 

2. Proper Hydration

Having good amount of liquids without sugar also helps in thinning out the mucus and bringing relief to the sinus. Juices, herbal or flavored tea and water intake should be higher during this time.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar to the Rescue

It has several health benefits and very effective in common colds and sinus. You can mix 2-3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water and drink it. You can drink this solution twice a day and it helps in relieving the blocked nose. 

4. Ginger – Home Remedies for Sinus

Everybody knows that ginger has multiple health benefits. Grate a big piece of ginger in the morning and take out its juice. Mix some honey in it and have it 3-4 times in a day.

5. Kadha

1. You can make a kadha (magic potion) at home with few basil leaves, some mint leaves, 3-4 cloves and ginger and boil this with 4 cups of water. You can sip this solution throughout the day.

2. Grind a large piece of ginger finely with 2 spoons of coriander powder & 1 spoon cumin powder. Mix this with 2 glasses of water and bring to boil and add 1 spoon of sugar. Once it cools down, squeeze half a lemon in it and drink.

6. Turmeric Milk

Turmeric has a chemical compound named curcumin in it which has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. A pinch of turmeric in boiled milk work wonders in cough & cold, as it helps reduce the swelling in the nasal passage. 

7. Immune Boosting Foods -Home Remedies for Sinus

Add some immune boosting foods to your daily diet like garlic & onion. They reduce the inflammation and helps in unblocking the clogged nasal passage.

8. Breathing Technique

People who are into meditation & yoga should continue their routine during sinus problem. Reason being, yoga & meditation involves structured breathing techniques which in turn helps in relieving the pain associated with sinus infection.

9. Correct Sleeping Posture

Maintaining a correct sleeping posture is very important because a blocked nose disturbs the sleep at night. Therefore an elevated head position is the preferable one, put 2-3 extra pillows as it will help in draining the sinus.

10. Humidifier

Dry air inside the home can aggravate the sinus infection. Running a humidifier takes away the dryness from the air inside your home and helps you breathe easy.

11. Hot/cold Therapy – Sinus Home Remedies

A natural technique of getting rid of the pain & blockage of the sinus is the hot & cold compress therapy. You can try this by placing a hot compress on your sinuses for 3-4 minutes followed by placing a cold compress for 30 seconds. Repeat this process 4-6 times a day. 

12. Limit the Indulgence

Smoking & alcohol intake can worsen the sinus and increase the inflammation in the nasal passages. Therefore, limit your intake and if possible do not take it till your infection becomes better.
