How Is India Planning To Grow Its Hydrogen Mission?

To understand India’s Hydrogen Mission, you simply have take the note of the reservoir of opportunities that stare at one of the world’s largest democracies on the face of the planet concerning the element simply known as ‘H.’ An important constituent toward energy generation, such a fundamental demand of a country constituted by no fewer than 1.38 billion (according to the 2020 figures), hydrogen presents a fascinating business challenge for businesses across sectors and industries.

And it can be said in no uncertain terms that where it comes to making most of this key colorless, odorless element, the country is all set to unfurl what is being called India’s Hydrogen mission.

A lot stands to be gained out of making the most of this critical element, one that’s riddled with an endless array of utilities. But how so?

Whether it is fertilizer production or petroleum refining, or for that matter- the usage in fuel cells for generating electricity, power or heat, hydrogen, a multifaceted entity, lends itself to productivity in all possible directions.

Therefore, the key to unlocking India’s hydrogen mission is to tap into a multi layered business opportunity whose impact is simply immeasurable.

As a matter of fact, so gung-ho are some of the biggest business houses in the country regarding India’s hydrogen mission that this mega challenge is gradually evidencing- if facts are to be believed- the coming together of several big businesses such as the Tatas, Mahindra, and the Ambanis.

So what exactly is making the understandable hype regarding India’s Hydrogen mission?

A recent report published in Business Insider happened to share the following development:

India is planning to capitalise on one of the most abundant elements on earth — hydrogen. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman announced the National Hydrogen Mission during the Budget 2021-22 to gain from this universally-available element.

The green energy source could also bring together some of India’s biggest companies like Reliance, Tatas, Mahindras, and Indian Oil, according to Chaityana Giri (fellow, Space and Ocean Studies, associated with Mumbai-based think-tank Gateway House)!

That being said, the big sense that one makes from this development is that, if things fall in accordance to the big ambitious plans to kickstart what’s being dubbed India’s Hydrogen Mission, then the country will soon have its own version of bodies like the European Hydrogen Coalition or the Hydrogen Council.

But, without any further delay, let’s first understand how can India develop hydrogen in the first place? Aren’t the available renewable forms of energy sufficient?

Truth be told, Hydrogen, as of now, is developed or obtained through a common or popular method, i.e., by means of the electrolysis of water. Secondly, there’s an alternative way that can be worked out keeping in mind that sooner than any later, water will definitely prove to be a scarce resource. In that case, hydrogen can be obtained through the way of natural gas. It can be used as a fuel.

And while much of India is currently gearing up toward the electric vehicle revolution (wherein the lithium-ion battery is the big winner), hydrogen too, in due course of time, can be used as an efficient alternative toward the green mobility revolution.

Reports and studies frequently suggest that hydrogen-enabled cars can actually go twice the distance (in one charge) as covered by an EV!

To submit with fervent optimism, as being experienced by experts and industry leaders, hydrogen could well fuel the next big wave for divergent Indian enterprises!
