A massive fire broke out in the slums near Old Delhi’s Sadar Bazar area on Monday night. The fire was suspected to have triggered due to a short circuit which was followed by a cylinder blast. Around 300 shanties (slums) were gutted due to this fire leaving 700 people homeless.
The fire started at 6:05 pm and spread rapidly while demolishing all the slums scattered around the area. The presence of plastic and other inflammable wastes in the area was the main cause behind this rapid escalation of fire. 30 fire tenders were rushed to the site and by 10:00 pm the situation was taken under control.
Only two people were reported injured as all the residents were rushed out from the area in the initial stage and the cooling process was still underway.
Another fire broke out at a Nepali Garment shop at Meena Bazar, in the wee hours of Tuesday. Eight fire tenders were rushed to the site and the fire was brought under control in a couple of hours.
The owner of the shop was disheartened and said that he had been running the shop for the past 40 years and this was the first time that such an incident has happened. All the material was destroyed in flames but no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire was unknown till the last update.
The Delhi Government now has a huge responsibility to provide shelter to all the people who became homeless after the fire at shanties near Sadar Bazar and the government has also constituted a committee to investigate the matter.
