Military College In Hyderabad Develops AI-Based Device That Alerts Driver From Dozing Off!

It can be said that accidents are one of the great nadirs of our times where it specifically comes to big urban cities of India. The roads might be big or wide, but the sheer number of cars and the manic speeds at which we witness not just cars but also bikes engage in daily jousts is a bit daunting to witness. Reckless driving, driving at high-speeds, driving despite alcohol-consumption, lane-cutting without engaging the indicator and what not! All of these have collectively increased the road accident count in India, a paranoia year after year.

While thankfully much of 2020 being pandemic-marred hardly saw fatalities across the country, the world sitting behind closed doors (to maintain social distancing), 2019 was once again that year that highlighted the great plight that is road accidents occurring in India.

For example, take a look at this disturbing number from the year before the pandemic hit 2020: there were no fewer than 4,80,652 accidents in 2019 in India that led to 151,113 lost their lives. But there are yet more reasons that lead to accidents unruly and sudden that they may be and it’s that of the drivers succumbing to bouts of sleep.

If you come to think of it, such instances can lead to severely painful endings. But one of the finest pieces of news at this point in time related to this horrible troubler in India arrives from the city of Hyderabad. And it’s that a medical college in Hyderabad has developed an AI-based device that actually warns drivers from dosing off whilst they are behind the wheels on the road.

The Hyderabad-based Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, better known as the MCEME, has developed this very vital device that can actually help eradicate the risk of road accidents.

This device, reportedly speaking, raises an alarm to caution drivers from dosing off avoiding what could possibly be terrible accidents in the wake.

A report covering interesting details about the newfound invention, such a stellar news from the city of Hyderabad reported the following captivating highlights:

The AI-based Accident Prevention System, developed under a pilot project, has been handed over to the Telangana government for considering its due utilisation in the civil domain.

The device, meant to be fitted on the dashboard of a vehicle, uses sensors to monitor the eyes of the driver and raises an alarm if found closed for a certain period. This device, the MCEME believes, can prevent driver negligence to an extent and prevent road accidents.

More information stemming from the newfound invention suggest that the device is to be fitted on the dashboard of a vehicle and it uses sensors to monitor the driver’s eyes. However, the bit on the alarm works like this- the device sounds the alarm if the eyes of the driver are found to be closed for a certain duration of time.

Key forces to have piloted such a commanding discovery include:

Lieutenant General TSA Narayanan, Commandant, MCEME and Colonel Commandant Corps

Sundeep Kumar Maktala, President of Telangana Information and Technology Association (TITA) (who collaborated with MCEME in the project)

The device, it is known, is a modular system with a plug and play facility that draws minimum power from the battery. Once the prototype is approved by the concerned bodies, it remains to be seen as to how soon can the brilliant invention be fitted to our four-wheelers.
