COVID Heroes From Delhi: Sub-Inspector Donates Plasma, Saves Pregnant Woman

It is during moments of immense crisis where you get to see the difference between a hero and someone who keeps to himself, turning ever so blind to the ensuing chaos. But not everyone appears or acts cowardly in times of duress. And these days, in India, a country completely gripped by the haunting COVID fear, there are those individuals who are emerging as COVID heroes; individuals who are going beyond the call of duty to save and protect, safeguard and care for absolute strangers.

The other day, we read the inspirational tale of Mumbai’s Dattatray Sawant, today presents a different story altogether of a compassionate sub-inspector from the country’s national capital, whose timely support helped save the lives of two individuals, not one.

Delhi subinspector Akashdeep donated plasma, an utterly brave and timely act, as a result of which doctors were able to save the life of a pregnant woman. Reports suggest that the lady who immediately needed care was 21-week pregnant woman, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi’ Uttam Nagar.

But this kind act of benevolence didn’t just happen randomly; a social media post had been put wherein it was mentioned that a patient, a pregnant woman, urgently required plasma. And following the said tweet, the Delhi Police officials, who have been working under a timely and much-needed initiative, “Jeevan Rakshak,” reached out to the family of the admitted patient and offered full help.

While there’s utter chaos and fear harrowing all parts of the country’s national capital, there are also brave police officers who have devised a fine way of being of timely help and support to the aggrieved. That there has been a surge in COVID 19 cases, with the coming of the second wave, a digital data bank of plasma donors has been set up by the Delhi Police officers. By virtue of their setting up the vital service, today the donors are being connected to the needy recipients and hence, timely efforts are being made to save lives.

After the ‘Jeevan Rakshak’ team contacted the family members of the pregnant woman, they then approached SI Akashdeep, posted in Roop Nagar police station in north district. Akashdeep immediately agreed to donate his plasma and reached the hospital on May 10.

After donating his plasma, Akashdeep met the woman’s husband and prayed for the speedy recovery of the woman.

The husband said that he had tried to arrange plasma over the last two days, but the donors could not fulfill the basic criteria required as per medical guidelines. He had started to lose hope when the Delhi Police extended a helping hand.

Truth be told, it is thanks to the brave serving policemen like Delhi’s Sub inspector Akashdeep that there are people in the country who still believe in the duty-bound nature and commitment of the police system. Else, it doesn’t take us much time to throw ire at cops nowadays for times are such.

But then, not everyone is the same. Not every individual is interested in the welfare of the self. There are many still out there who care for the well-being and betterment of the society.
