Mammootty’s Biography

Muhammad Kutty Ismail Paniparambil, also known as Mammootty, is the biggest star in Mollywood. Mammootty was born on September 7, 1951, and grew up in a middle-class Muslim family in the village of Chempu near Vaikom in the Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala. His father, Ismail, was a wholesaler of clothes and grains. His mother, Fatima, was a housewife. He is the eldest child among 3 boys and 3 girls. His elementary education was at the Government High School at Kulasekharamangalam, Kottayam.

In the 1960s, his father moved his family to Ernakulam, where he attended Government School. He took a course before he went to college at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. He got his degree from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. He went to Government Law College, Ernakulam, and got an LL.B. He was a lawyer in Manjeri for two years. He married Sulfath in 1979, and they have two children Surumi (born 1982) and Dulquer Salmaan (born 1986).

Mammootty made his film debut in 1971 in K. S. Sethumadhavan’s Anubhavangal Paalichakal as a junior artist. Mela, which came out in 1980 and was written and directed by K. G. George, was the first movie in which Mammootty was the main actor. In the 1980s, Mammootty made movies like Sphodanam (directed by P. G. Viswambharan), where his name was listed as “Sajin,” and several more movies. He did more than 150 movies in the span of five years between 1982-1988. At present his fee per movie is more than 10 crores. 

His movie career is over five decades now and he has acted in more than 400 films. This includes Malayalam. Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and English. He is the recipient of many awards and accolades which includes 3 National awards, 13 Filmfare awards, 7 Kerala state film awards. Not only that he received the prestigious Oadma Shri awards by the Indian government in 1998. He was also honored with Kerala Prabha award in 2022 which is the second- highest honor given by the government of Kerala.

Mammootty’s participation in other areas of work other than movies includes production. The South Indian superstar is the Chairman of Malayalam Communication, which controls all the Malayalam TV stations, like Kairali TV, WE TV, and People TV. He is also in charge of Megabytes, a production company. In addition, he is the ambassador for the Akshaya project, which was made to help people learn to read and write in India’s rural areas.
