He doesn’t play the good-cop and bad-cop routine. Boring movies that celebrate some fluffy, shallow stuff of life bordering on materialism is not him. He won’t do a gypsy movie or play a junkie just for the heck of it or to necessarily show the dark side of life or things like that.
You won’t find him essay the bad guy out of no context, with savagery ruling the roost. Even as badassery may be the order of the day in Hollywood, you won’t find the dude engage in any of it, for no particular reason at all.
There are two kinds of actors. Those that try, go out of the way to feature in a script. Then, there are those for whom scripts are specially written, storylines specifically created and dialogues, poignantly drafted.
Perhaps, in over three decades of stay at Hollywood, having traversed from the random teenager to the sci-fi action hero, having been the enlightened one to being the samurai few cared to ignore, you know where to place a certain Keanu Reeves.
With heroes existing on the big-screen, fiction giving us a taste of what reality never did or hardly does, Keanu Reeves eschews the gap between reality and fiction.
There are bad guys. There are good guys, and then there’s Keanu Reeves- a man who seems perpetually driven by an insatiable desire to better his craft and lend some nuance and credibility, not to mention believability in the complex canvass of roles he paints with rich fervour (and that very Keanu-ish understated talent)!
Perhaps this is the reason why the 1964-born actor- yeah, believe it or not- plays a hitman with a heart, as seen in John Wick, arguably his most famous movie franchise post the Matrix era.
Perhaps that is why it seems to make sense that John Wick chases down the bad guys, hunting them one after the other, engaging in subtle acts of clinical elimination where the moronic creatures’ biggest fault is that they kill a pet dog!
Right?
And guess what? Now Keanu Reeves himself has spoken, breaking his silence about the classic hitman series- John Wick-touching upon an aspect of the film perhaps none of us would want a debate on.
So wondering what that is? Well, let’s dispense with silly guesswork, shall we?
Keanu Reeves had the following to say on the aspect of what according to him would be an ideal ending of the unmistakably entertaining movie-franchise:
“Hmm if it was Marvel. I could do both. I can die in battle and then come back. But what would I prefer? I want John to be happy. So, let’s have him walk out in the sunset because he’s not, he’s fighting for his life. So if there’s a battle to be won, it’s his life. So that he can remember the love and for Helen. So, walk off into the sunset.“
The above told, while it’s a fact that across his majestic Hollywood career, Keanu Reeves has played a wide bouquet of interesting characters, each with a distinct appeal and flavour of its own, what, according to you suits the Canadian-American actor the most? John Wick 3 is expected to release soon in a theatre near you.
