World’s First ATM Machine Got A Golden Makeover On Its 50th Birthday!

The first automated teller machine (ATM), which was unveiled by Barclays at their Enfield branch in north London on 27 June 1967 got the best  50th-anniversary gift ever. The British bank decorated the Machine in gold and placed a red carpet in front, for its users. Not only that they also added a commemorative plaque on its 50th-anniversary.

The automated teller machine (ATM) was actually invented by John Shepherd-Baron. Barclays commissioned Baron to create six automated teller machine and was the first bank ever to launch it.  It was Reg Varney, a popular actor who starred in the British TV comedy show “On The Buses” who withdrew the cash for the first time ever from the machine.

Barclays Bank has stated that the invention of the ATM was a historical moment that completely changed the way the world thought about and used cash.

Since 1967 to 2017, there are an estimated three million ATMs across the world, around 70,000 cash machines are there in the UK only that have dispensed 175 billion pounds in 2016.

It’s  not only the 50th anniversary of ATM but this month has also been marked as the 30th year since the UK bank introduced the debit card on 3 June, 1987.
