In the course of the last several years, Greece has often find itself in the wrong end of the spectrum as far as its economics and dwindling fortunes are concerned. Often weighing heavily on Germany for economic bailouts, life hasn’t been exactly all that fun for one of the most beautiful countries in the whole wide world.
But for a country in whose ebb there rests tremendous, sprawling natural beauty, millions of eye-pleasing blue houses standing firmly at the banks of breathtakingly beautiful blue beaches, there’s a new ravishing in the heart of its national, economic capital: Athens.
In the recent times, Greece’s sprawling cultural centre- a habitat offering a multitude of many a learning activity- Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre- has offered respite from the morose one commonly hears about a struggling, waning economy.
In the fate of every nation, there comes a time when things don’t go according to plans and therefore its populace has no choice other than embracing some harsh realities. The same could be said for Greece. But ever a country known for its resilience to lead a wholesome, happy life- a cheerful answer was discovered in the form of an uplifting piece of architecture: Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre.
Known for its proclivity toward embracing and enjoying a multitude of cultures, a strong sense of vibe and people-to-people connect is the standing ethos of the majestic Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre. But this is no ordinary centre of social engagement and cultural leanings.
Apparently, at the cost of an astonishing €596m, famous shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos had gifted the country a shining reminder of its inclination toward building a monument of great reverence.
The Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre is the result of a visionary design of renowned architect Renzo Piano, who actually used rubble to create a slope that doubles as a green roof. A vast solar canopy powers the entire building and one of Greece’s astonishingly new landmarks is a fitting tribute to luscious modern architecture having sustainability at its heart.
Of course, key highlights, apart from having earned the prestigious LEED Platinum certification is the giant 42-acre park that is cushioned by plenty of clean, green open spaces, playgrounds, water-jets and, vegetable gardens. Already a national treasure, the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre is used for varied socio-cultural engagements such as for book launches, special screenings, deliverances of lectures and talks by eminent world personalities and has stirred up some emotion among Greeks who look up to it as a symbol of great pride.
