Why Has Israel Been Carrying Mass Arrests Of Palestinians?

Another day and another incident that simply exudes dejection, violence and disharmony in a region that’s had plenty of it already. And not from now, but since several decades in the past. A region where the day there’s peace or silence, or at very the little, some traces of it- it suddenly begins to feel that something’s not quite right.

That something’s amiss.

You’d say this is sarcasm. But to those suffering every passing day owing to the embitterment between Israel and Palestine, perhaps the right phrase is “Scarcasm!”

Too many scars already for the body to bear and the mind to labour. September 19, 2021. How does one remember it? In any other part of the world, it could be a Sunday, but in that part of the world where Jewish conflict with the Arab neighbours is but, a way of life and dreadfully so, it was just another day.

Just with more violence.

Rather, make that another day with too much to bear for the warring clans on either side of the conflict.

On a day where Israel carried mass arrests of the Palestinians, Gilboa was roaring and there was chaos in the mountains of Malkishua.

The very fact that no fewer than six Palestinians escaped Israel’s captivity in the first place would read like a classic breach, very anti-climax. Stuff you read in a spy novel, of the kinds that a Ronen Bergman would like to get into the details of, if not get too impressed with.

But then, there’s also how Israel fights back, as it actually did, in initiating a program of mass arrests over the Palestinians. Though, one’s not quite sure how might that course of action be read or judged?

The best response to what was an embarrassing breach of security in the first place? Or just the way Israel commands the whip with which it renders blow after blow over an enemy, its very neighbour, one that can’t see a way of life other than being hell-bent on Israel’s destruction?

In what can only be described as a retribution of sorts in response to an oddity given Israel’s penchant to maintain the extreme high standards it (nearly unfailingly) achieves in ‘dealing’ with its enemies or dangerous elements, the mass arrests made over Palestinians over the last few hours aren’t at all surprising.

But then the Naftali Bennett-led country would unsuspectingly offer a reason why the extremeness, if that’s the right word, shown toward the Palestinians: several arrests and raids having been made in different cities such as Hebron, Nablus, Ramallah, and other cities.

Here’ what Al Jazeera had to say over an issue that’s not necessarily sent shockwaves in the Middle East but only made the divisive lines all too clear between Israel and Palestine:

“We have documented an average of 14 arrests per day in the occupied West Bank since the men escaped,” Milena Ansari from Addameer told Al Jazeera. “This does not include the Palestinians arrested within Israel.”

A number of Palestinian children were also swept up in the latest wave of arrests. Thirteen-year-old Mustafa Amira, from the town of Nilin near Ramallah, was arrested by Israeli soldiers last week while he was on village land close to a separation wall built by Israel to divide the area from settlements.

The elders, as often is the case, bickering… the learned ones, the ones ‘compelled’ as they’d say in their respective reasons for inflicting hatred over one another and resultantly, the children suffering in the end.

Where does it end, Israel? What will happen next, Palestine?
