Why Has Russia Expelled 40 German Diplomats?

There’s never any good that a war did and to anyone for that matter!

Bloodshed, loss of innocent lives and a feeling of relentless embitterment- there’s little else that one could say or do about a situation as sorry as a war.

But with respect to what is happening at this point in time in Europe- there are some facts that one needs to be aware of.

What we know about the war in Ukraine is that is a war like no other, having plunged Ukraine and Russia into a bloodied affair. While the common narrative and rightly so is that much of Ukraine is down on its feet with millions having abandoned homes and as many having left elsewhere for safer shores, there’s more that one needs to know and be aware of.

Truth be known, it’s not that the bloodshed is only on the Ukrainian side of things; there’s a constant loss of lives even on the part of Russia. Amid this warring decay, one of the things that has often made news in the mainstream but perhaps hasn’t been given all that much attention is that countless Russian soldiers too have lost their lives. And yet, the common man in Putin country is being told that the war against Ukraine is just and fair and is, over and above anything else, a battle to protect the sovereignty of the Russian ideal- which is anything but true.

That being said, a huge fall out from what is happening at present in Ukraine and Russia is Germany. The strongman of Western Europe as it is often called, Germany and Russia are experiencing highly tense relations at the moment.

Never before in recent modern history have the ties between Germany and Russia retreated to such a bitter course than what is evident now.

As a matter of factly, the sanctions imposed on Russia have basically plunged the German-Russian relations to their lowest point since the Cold War.

And in giving it back to Germany, for a lack of better expression, Russia has expelled no fewer than 40 German diplomats.

Read that again: 40 German diplomats!

Meanwhile, back in Russia, there was an open protest made to the head of the German Diplomatic Mission, present in Moscow in lines with the rather open culture of unfriendliness shown by the Olaf Scholz-led country toward Russia in lines with the latter’s actions towards Ukraine.

And while, soon after that 40 German diplomats would be rendered expelled by Russia, the decision, however, is believed to affect as many as 100 Germans.

All of that being told, here’s what a report published on the burning topic of the German-Russian ties on Al Jazeera:

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said in a statement that the move was “expected” but was “in no way justified”.

She said the 40 Russian diplomats previously expelled by Berlin “did not serve diplomacy for a single day” while those expelled by Russia had “not done anything wrong”.

Earlier in April, Germany had thrown light of the fact that it was going to expel what was said to be a “significant number” of Russian diplomats, amid similar moves by other European states, over Ukraine.
