Why Have Hundreds Of Flights Been Cancelled In Germany All Of A Sudden?

There’s a saying that when you stop looking for it, it stops looking for you too. But you never know, when and where trouble pops out of somewhere or someplace! Isn’t it? And if the above were to be understood from the current context then perhaps it would remind you of just what is happening in Europe.

Surely, it is one of the most enigmatic continents of all on the face of the earth, but where 2022 has served a reminder then it could be said that this has been a troublesome year already for Europe.

While on the one hand, there’s been an endless skirmish where Ukraine and Russia are concerned, the latter clearly the shallow aggressor in the case, there’s trouble brewing where Germany stands as well. And while the latest cause of problems in Germany is nowhere related to what is happening in Ukraine and Russia, things have tumbled down in great Deutschland.

News from the land of the great Autobahns, the delectable taste of Wurst and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle is that just out of nowhere, tens of hundreds of flights have been cancelled in Germany.

And make no mistake- the flights that currently stand cancelled are both to and fro Germany!

Apparently, the news regarding the cancellation of flights in Germany arrived on Monday, i.e., March 14, 2022.

It is, therefore, understandable, that the entire aviation transport system has turned upside down in the beating heart of Western Europe. But all of that being said, just why has this happened that all of a sudden countless flights stood cancelled?

Well, all of this is down to the fact that the security workers have gone on a strike citing dispute in their wages (wage terms with the said authorities). And where the current situation stands, then it is not clear as to by when could one expect a peaceful resolution to the ongoing strife between the security workers at airports and the authorities.

Further to the above, what’s also known is that the security workers went on a full one-day strike in no fewer than six separate airports all across Germany.

There were strikes at the airports including- Dusseldorf, Cologne, Berlin and others.

This is why the issue escalated to an overall tense situation at a pan European level. According to the news portal CGTN, the following information has come to light with regards to the ongoing crisis in Germany’s aviation system:

The strike comes as airlines are reeling from the impacts of the military operation in Ukraine, which has lasted 19 days now.

The Russian military operation has resulted in fuel prices and airspace closures, which come as countries were continuing their emergence from a two-year disruption in travel demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 160 of the cancelled flights were at Dusseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals.

But what’s really troublesome is the fact that the airport of Frankfurt took the worst hit of the workers’ strike.

As a matter of fact, the Frankfurt airport happens to be the busiest in all of Germany and just last month, it handled around 2.1 million passengers.

Though for now, it is not known as to by when might the ongoing issue come to a peaceful end.
