Confirmed news reports point to a shocking development from Europe that back in the days of the Obama Administration, the United States was spying on several European officials, and this included the German chancellor Angela Merkel. But is that the only telling story? What’s rather surprising is that Denmark, with whom Merkel’s Germany enjoys a healthy diplomatic relationship, the two being regular trading partners, assisted the United States for spying on Germany.
But then what was the need to keep a watchful eye from the dark when the US and Germany enjoy an equation you’d expect from two keen allies? What about absolute hindrance thus causing an unwanted break into the country’s matters of national interest?
How come US not be in the wrong in all of this?
Apparently, Germany’s northern neighbour, Denmark used to full effect its Defence Intelligence Service in its bid to help the-then Barrack Obama-led United States on spying on Germany. While on its part, US’s National Security Agency, the much-feared NSA kept a close watch on Angela Merkel and Germany.
But news about the US keeping a guarded watch over it’s allies isn’t a brand new development; for it was back in 2013 when news concerning the US spying on its allies first came to light. These disclosures, too, it mustn’t be forgotten, came to light only at the behest of the brave efforts of Julian Assange who today finds himself as nothing more than an enemy of the state with US wanting to arrest him and do all sorts of awful things they do to those found guilty of exploiting the National Secrets act.
Yet, strange and baffling it is for a country that calls itself the home to the free doesn’t believe in the freedom of affairs of people it proudly treats as its own allies.
What’s now known is that there was a close proximity between the NSA and the Defence Intelligence Service based in Denmark especially from 2012-14.
The information collected from Germany clandestinely, of course, came through the form of underwater hidden internet cables.
A close eye was kept on every political and national move of Angela Merkel, and not just that- two of her past rivals for the chancellory- Peer Steinbruck from Social Democrats and Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
And here’s what you might find rather surprising given it shows the clear extent to which the Danish forces went in engaging in cloak and dagger operations over their neighbours- a data centre was constructed specifically on the Danish island of Amager, which isn’t that distant from the capital city of Copenhagen.

Established news platform Politico had the following to add on the trending development from the beating heart of Western Europe:
The media reports describe a system of Danish-American cooperation used to surveil and stock data from underwater internet cables. DR reports that a data center was even built for that purpose at a Danish intelligence facility on the island of Amager, south of Copenhagen.
Merkel was reportedly among the targets, as well as two of her past rivals for the chancellery, Social Democrats Peer Steinbrück and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the latter of whom is now the German president. DR also reported that other high-level officials had been surveilled from France, Norway and Sweden, though did not name them.
Contacted by the news organizations conducting the investigation, the German, Swedish and Norwegian governments said they had not been aware of the Danish intelligence report’s conclusions, while the office of the French president declined to respond.
That being said, elsewhere in Europe, several state leaders have come out in support of Deutschland in the wake of US’ spying on Germany citing, “systematic interception of close allies is just not acceptable!”
Now the key question is- how might the US respond, if at all, it does?
