The breathtakingly beautiful city replete with chapels and museums and even a dark Nazi past, Wien or Vienna, as we know it is bound to be shaped meticulously by the most resourceful form of renewable energy that there is- solar energy. But just how is it going to happen and how exactly is solar power, as experts cite, going to shape the future of one of the most captivating of all European cities?
Starting the month of May, specifically around mid-May, the famous Austrian capital that houses, to this day, the home of musical maestro Mozart, planned to invest big in solar power. The intent being to encash the rich benefits of a form of energy that’s absolutely pure and economical in purpose.
With a clear intent to subsidise the photovoltaic systems on green roofs, Vienna is clearly aiming at increasing the production of solar power by as much as five times. And implicit in this ambitious aim is the deadline; the city famous for Opera and Waltz wishes to achieve the aim by as early as 2025.
Come June 1 and the plan to subsidise photovoltaic systems on the green roofs will be implanted by the city travellers hog to in huge numbers each year.
It’s also not a random development or a sudden plan as much of the developed part of the world, particularly the United States, United Kingdom and several EU nations have for long been attempting to harness the very best that renewable forms of energy have on offer.
Furthermore, speaking on Vienna’s ambitious plans to go solar in a big way, here is what the Environment City Councillor had to say, “This is the biggest photovoltaic offensive in history. The aim is for us to install as many photovoltaic systems every year by the end of the government period as we have in the last 15 years together.
That being said, soon, it is believed, Vienna will also implement a series of plans to increase the dependence on solar power as the mainstream source to generate electricity for everyday usage, a sterling idea particularly keeping in mind the challenges earth is stymied with given the threat of climate change.
Here is what famous news outlet The Mayor had to offer on the developing story from the heart of West Europe:
With this solar power strategy, the city will rely on large areas that serve as photovoltaic power plants as well as private households that are supposed to green their roofs and simultaneously use solar power. The deadline for implementation is one year from granting of funding.
With further development by 2030, solar energy will generate 10% of the required electricity. It was calculated that this could provide solar power to 530,000 Vienna residents. As a first step, the Viennese photovoltaic green roof subsidy is implementing a new aid system. The highest amount of funding amounts to 180,000 euros.

To add to the above, in order to execute the promising plans for the city, the funding toward Vienna Green Electricity fund is to be increased by a further 2 million euros.
Now that the national and financial capital of Austria has taken such a bright step toward adopting a more pro-renewable energy future, will we be seeing other cities in the country such as Linz, Salzburg following suit?
