Do one good deed a day. Ever heard that one? You may have. It is a common saying marking the true meaning of what it means to be humane; what it means to be a good human being. But the question is, in today’s times who really does a good deed?
In times wrought with crime, insincerity, greed, lust and jealousy, one is more likely to hear about loss and damage than about a good deed. Then imagine, how rare would it be to hear an absolute stranger act as a good samaritan for another? Sounds quite unlikely, right? But it is true.
As 2017 is preparing to wish us adieu with the new year knocking on our doors in all earnestness, there’s come a great news- one that happens in rare parts- that’s made the day of perhaps all those who’ve cared to go through it.
Apparently, a San Francisco based police officer donated one of her kidneys to a complete stranger leading to saving the latter’s life. Isn’t that fantastic. But truth be told, the sensational story of San Francisco based cop Anna Cuthbertson may not have turned out to be this way especially since the lady hadn’t ever considered organ donation in her life.
It was only when Anna heard about organ donation on a podcast with a woman donating one of her organs that she decided to change her mind and act the part of a good samaritan. It turns out that earlier this year, upon making a visit to the website matchingdonors.com, Anna discovered the sheer amount of people who had created their pages, in a bid to find a donor; and in turn, to donate or have an organ donated. The entire process of turning up to save another fellow human’s life left an indelible mark on Ms. Cuthbertson’s conscience.
With emotion catching her throat, the San Francisco resident added, “there were so many people that just needed somebody to step forward so that they could live.” Then upon doing an exhaustive research on the aftermath of donating an organ, Anna Cuthbertson discovered a patient who could’ve been helped and indeed, saved. It turned out that sixty five year old Joan Grealis, who had gotten sick five years ago due to a kidney disease needed one to survive.
That is how the two discovered each other and the brave police officer came to the rescue of the aggrieved. But that’s not all. Anna Cuthbertson- a police officer for 10 years- feels that her act was part of her having been associated with the armed forces for a while where a sense of supreme sacrifice and courage binds an individual to his duty. During her time in the military and law enforcement, the woman has tried to create a difference to people’s lives.
Today, the duo share a bond and the kind, benevolent gesture by Ms Cuthbertson has proven that the world is still full of sincere, kind and good natured people who are willing to step forward and help even strangers in dire circumstances. May 2018 show us more such positive, life altering accounts.
