Aranya Johar’s last slam poem, ‘A Brown Girl’s Guide To Gender’ was a massive hit on social media, for all the right reasons. She pointed out some of the most obvious things that women had to go through in this society, however, it was the bluntness that left everyone shook with every single word.
She recently came out with another slam poem of her’s through the medium of UnErase Poetry. This time, Aranya titled her poem as ‘A Brown Girl’s Guide To Beauty’, which beautifully lays down all the red-flags of our society in terms of beauty and that ideal body. Not only women, but even men have to go through a lot in order to fit into the mold that our society has created, which is not talked about much. However, Aranya does it. She talked about how she was told that boys only liked girls who were Fair and Lovely, haven’t we all had?
There’s a lot that we need to look out for, men have been told to hush down about their insecurities, while women have been constantly gifted fairness creams. Isn’t all of this, a reality for a major part of this country’s population? Because if it wasn’t, the cosmetic industry would have lost its wrath to some healthy food brand and both men and women, would have been told that there’s more than fair skin.
