Writing isn’t always everyone’s favorite thing in the world. After all, it involves both physical effort and mental stuff. Well, yeah, that’s just the word you need to avoid in writing. “Stuff”, and other words are actually among the 5 weak words to avoid in writing. Did it ever occur to you? Possibly yes, right? But still, there was a dearth of clarity.
But do think of something.
Can there be any meaning or order or peace without clarity? So let’s focus on this for a bit. How about a perspective?
One reckons, we often tend to give a great deal of thought to things that don’t matter. Well, yes, somethings just don’t matter, yet we cling on to them. Do we not?
For instance, it could most noticeably be, say others’ impression of us. How can you control it? Haven’t we all bothered about this? In fact, has anyone, barring the almighty or whatever higher figure of calling there exists around us, succeeded in knowing such a thing? Who’s to know? But what we can definitely avoid are a lot of things. At a physical level, we can avoid the intake of unhealthy food. And at the same time, at an intellectual level, we can avoid what one calls as ‘weak words!’ Yes, there are weak words to be avoided in writing, which leads us to a very potent question.
Do you know of the 5 weak words to avoid in writing?
Let’s begin then!
Here’s something important to know. Well, the term “very” does happen to feature among 5 weak words to avoid in writing. Now, you might ask why’s that? Haven’t we all been victims to a certain over-usage of this seemingly harmless phrase?
Surely one doesn’t need to indulge in a bit of a “truth or dare” to ascertain that.
The reason “very” must be avoided in writing because most commonly, it’s believed to be a word that helps to express “emphasis.” In other words, someone tries to emphasize the relative importance and unimportance of an occurrence, phenomenon, activity, feeling, emotion when using the term “very!”
But it’s always feasible to use a word that deems fit than a word such as this (very). So how about using something that is more descriptive. So, as an example, if someone says the sun is very bright today you could instead simply say it’s sunny today.
Experts are of a different view, and something you should know, whether you’re a student or a writer. It’s better to use a descriptive word. Hence, “very” isn’t so good. Try more. Search for something else. You’ll find it.
Most commonly, this is actually a word that is used either a great deal or commonly. It could signify a personal note to someone. It could be an E-mail where one is elaborating about some machinery or an electrical product in a brochure or an online magazine.
Yes, that kind of conversation.
But here’s why you ought to avoid ‘just’.
Truthfully speaking, this seemingly harmless word doesn’t really add much value. In many instances, you might have come to note (if at all) that the phrase “just” doesn’t add real value. So what to do? Well, move on!
Here’s something that’s really as tricky as it is important to know in one’s mind.
Among the 5 weak words to avoid in writing stands ‘stuff!’
This, it mustn’t be forgotten, is a word that offers a bit of a clash, especially, in the connotation. It’s no dramatization one could mean that he enjoyed the food served during the last night’s dinner and may actually end up saying, “Hey, I loved last night’s stuff!”
What stuff are we talking about leaving: we’ll all definitely try to do away with the needless and in the context of language, ‘stuff’ sounds a thing that could be laden with some expectations yet no affirmation or ascertainment.
You could lose all your stuff if you did leave the door open. Right? So it’s perfectly sensible to treat one’s vocabulary with one less word starting today. No more ‘stuff’!
So here’s an example. Consider you are about to enter an interview and the young thought leader you’ve come to face begins to welcome you upon the end of the discussion.
Seeming full of hope, she soon says, “I can hire you, but I just need to know some stuff!”
Well, you immediately think to yourself: “why’s this even being said to me?”
“You want to know about what stuff, you wonder in pure amazement?
The truth of the matter is that the very word ‘some’ is, actually a vague indicator toward that fact that -it could be anything- truthfully speaking.
‘Some’ isn’t a very clear word at all. Let that be known. And here’s a thing you cannot discount. There are those out there who must have gotten used to using ‘some.’
But let’s face it: how many of us are in that league? Nonetheless, ‘Some’ happens to feature among the 5 weak words to avoid in writing. It will actually better your presentation or written output.
After all, it’s something we do want, right?
It ought to be asked: do you not have faith in yourself; about your talents and abilities that you end up using the phrase ‘actually’, making it part of our everyday parlance, minus much effort.
What does one mean when using the phrase actually? Does the term ‘actually’ not allude to someone who is a bit uncertain? Or could it be referencing someone who’s perhaps not quite in the know-how of things or a present state of affair?
When you use the phrase “actually,” you are trying to either understate or overstate something that is commonly known and understood. Why not be specific and brief?
